DNJ - what are these like to drive as a matter of interest?

I'd love to have a go in one of those, I bet if I drove one for a week i'd not want to drive anything else.

Guys,,,,,my mate who sold me the 505 actually bought this. We are coming over to collect it next weekend. Should be interesting.

The lady who owned it is actually from Dublin. They moved back here recently. Had left the car behind, not thinking it would get an Irish Buyer .

My god, lucky I missed that or would have been £550 lighter, either that or a weekend's agonising over whether to buy it or not.

My favourite car, although a 405 auto suits me better now. Absolutely wonderful machines - there was a black one with 248,000 miles and assorted problems on Retrorides recently which the deluded individual wanted £995 for, although this one looks quite good value. Would love to see some pics when it's collected.

I remember the one on RR - good luck to your mate RR - I saw the thread at first thing and was on it like a shot...just as well really...

did anyone read Simster's column in PC this month - a few paragraphs on how the pus of the 80's and 90's were built for uncompromising handling and it all went down the kludgie when the '06 s were dropped and the lardy pish donkey jizz arse juice that is the 307 came out

I'm no handling expert, but of all my cars I think my 305s were the ones I could drive around corners most quickly.

They might not have had the most grip and the tyres aren't that wide, and there is a bit of body roll (I think a bit less on a GTX) but I always found them ultra confidence inspiring and easy to loon about in. My 305 estate would lift off oversteer and I could even four wheel drift it but it used to happen in a really nice progressive predictable way.

I'm sure a 205 GTI has "better" handling but you are far more likely to go through a hedge backwards than in a 305.

The front suspension is essentially the same as a BX but with springs. Actually the estate ones are the same as a BX as well with the strut flat under the floor. The saloon has simple trailing arms and vertical strut.

The normal 305s are quite high and you can drive over a 9" block and it won't touch anything. Not sure about the GTX. With mud and snow tyres they are nigh on unstoppable. I remember mine as being pretty good in snow even with normal tyres on.

There was a chap on another forum I frequent who had one of these with a 16v lump, tweaked suspension and brakes. Looked completely normal, went like stink and it used to take the piss out of 205 GTi 1.9s in the corners.

Yeah. my shagged S5 cornered rather well when I hoyed those Rallye steels (with P7000s) on it. The new engine will probably send them up in smoke.

Love the GTX boots though, will have to source a set for 'alternative' use. The saloons are really well proportioned, too.
