small jobs big improvement - 306 fettling

As I have already bored you around how much I am lurvin the 306 chod oilburner I will refrain from any more of the same.

It's missing a few bits ...like the grill badge, rear wipe arm etc...it also has some splendid rust on the leading edge of the bonnet.

I was thinking about tarting it up which is what I usually do but have actually quite liked the way that other drivers take one look and keep their distance....not wanting to have their silver A3 possibly damaged by some scruffy gallic tin.

My other thought is to just look after the mechanical and Interior bits and slap a load of rust killer on the ugly bits and either leave it or stick a 6 inch lyre of GAFFA TAYPE along the leading edge of the bonnet...and not bother replacing the badge...the idea is not so much rat but more utilitarian tat....

What would u do?

Idle question but one that seems to take an unreasonable amount of navel gazing rumination

Scrap is £188 a ton. That's not helpful I know. Get yer bits and Bobs from a breakers, they needn't be dear. I like the 306, having had an ex fiancee who had a diesel sporty one (blue, 2 door, cant remember the model). Yours is worth fixing I'd say as long as you get a breakers who doesn't want silly money.

When I had my 106 dizzler Scooters, I also had a stone-chipped rusty bonnet. My solution was to paint it with blackboard paint and draw a pirate on it with a parrat with a speech bubble announcing the arrival of "diesel knievel".

You could always sticker bomb it and put a roof rack full of crap on top for that "individual"* look.

*About as individual as liking football

Right.

Decision made!

I am going to fettle it up but will use a combo of newspaper, zinc mesh and filler together with some halfords add ons ....I fancy some really cheap wiper spoilers

Amazing what you can achieve in an hour.

I started doing some light fellting today -

first off a new bee sting for the Scoob - Mrs Scooters has been bemoaning the lack of radio 4 - now all resolved -£3 from ebay

Pug - the 306 DT lunches engine mounts - I stuck the trolley jack under the sump - took the weight of the engine - unbolted the top mount - raised the engine up and replaced the degraded mount with a new one. I wasn't sure I had the right part as the new mount was a whole inch and a half longer than the old one - turns out that is what the problem was and then failed the car clunks horribly under low end torque. It now drives like a different car amazinfg the difference. I might change the lower ones as I have noticed a touch of light bottom end shudder when pulling away.

I had a really nice leather gear gaiter I bought for the 205 Gti which I never got a chance to fit before the scrotes nicked it. The vinyl one on the 306 was pretty nasty so I have replaced it with the leather one - amazing how such a small thing improves the feeling of the car.

I would recommend OMP lightweight Mechanic's Gloves - they aren't water tight and some dirt etc will come throgh the back but at £2.50 a pair off the bay you can't argue - the grips are simpy covered in PVC which gives excellent feeling and grip.

Next job is the handbrake cables and then the locks

The sunroof is jammed - the motor wirrs away but nothing happens - I suspect it needs a good strip down and clean unless anyone has any ideas?

If the motor whirrs and nothing happens, that suggests that something has come adrift. Probably some impossible-to-reach clips or something. My old 21 had this problem.
