What could cause very little air to be coming through to the cabin when you can hear the fan working and the noise goes up and down when turning the fan speed knob? Blocked pollen filter perhaps? Helpfully, the fault is intermittent (though it does particularly enjoy appearing during longer drives!). I've thought about hitting it with a small fan, but I'm afraid of a potential backlash by the local fan clubs.

If it makes any difference, the temperature (either higher or lower) of the little air that is coming through is completely appropriate for the temp settings.
