Old sound and vision technology No A/S content

Today I found a carrier of old audio cassettes I thought were long since lost (hurrah--bootlegs, complilations folks had done for me etc) Also today the video in our combined TV/video (yes, I know ...) packed in. The infant is devastated as we've got loads of Thomas/Bob the Builder stuff on tape - plus I've got some good stuff too.

I know a few people on here are still into old lo-tech stuff, so two questions - any recommendations on transferring cassettes to cd and vcrs to dvd. I suspect that my computer is pretty low powered and not a huge amount of space for storing long vids.

Thanks fellas :)

What I did was transfer the stuff to the original PVR/DVD Recorder that we had via SCART - basically just left it to work the magic over night - then once I'd converted all of the stuff to DVD format I re-encoded to divx on the computer by using DVD ripping software or Nero Recode. :)

Perhaps not the best/most efficient solution but very cheap and easy to do yourself.
