Mini 850 engine and box (with funny gearstick arrangement)

Hi all,

I've been offered one of the above lumps complete but partially stripped. Is it worth sticking on e.bay or should it just be lobbed in the scrap bin? I'm aware that most mini owners want a nice 1300 lump rather than a smaller capacity unit so I'm not expecting much interest in it!

Its from an early Mini, apart from that I don't know much about it!

It's worth an ebay punt. The engine's not worth a lot, but the old pudding stirrer box might have a value - do you know if it's a 3 syncro? It's worth getting the casting numbers from the head and gearbox casing.

Its allways worth a go on shitbay - the vans used that box after the change in the cars.

^^^Sort of. The pudding stirrer box was used until 1973 on the 850 saloon and the 850/1000 Vans and Pick Ups. The difference is that when the four syncro box arrived in mid 1968, BLMC standardised the diff housing (into which the old pudding stirrer lever was located) buy using a special steel plate which bolted onto the remote change diff housing.

If it's a mega early (1959) unit it'll have a magnesium gearbox casing. Baulk ring syncros arrived late '62, the B Type box in 64 with a diaphragm clutch etc etc.

I'll get hold of it then and grab the numbers off the casing. If it turns out to be worthless that ill lob it in the scrap pile!
