Timing and octane booster

Recommended Posts

The BX has been a poor cold starter recently and down on torque at low speed. I just found the timing was way retarded, and spent ages with the timing light setting it to 10 degrees BTDC and it's back to it's old pinging ways (95 RON).

Does anyone know off hand which service stations stock Castrol Valvemaster Plus octane booster? I ran out ages ago and can't remember where I used to get it from... and don't want to have to make a special trip to Halfrauds if poss. Gonna try whang some in to see if that improves it before I look into other causes.

Cheers,

Valvemaster plus made a big difference to the allegro. No more pinking! You can get job-lots on ebay.

*edit* oh yeah, my local BP stocks it I think.

Halfrauds it was then, because my local BP filling station didn't have it.

Seeing as I could provoke it to pink even in 1st gear on Friday, I'll see if a tank or two dosed with Valvemaster does the trick. Anyone used Gunson Colortune on their motor - any good? I bought one ages ago, but I've never used it as it 's got a 14mm fitment as standard and I'd need to buy an adapter because the BX has slimmer plugs
