Modern question - Kangoo drive belt?

My uncle wants me to have a look at his engine. The steering went and then it wouldn't even turn the engine over.

I went to have a look, and found half the belt up the road, and the cord wrapped around the alternator and power steering pump pulleys. There's no other cord on the crank pulley or the tensioner.

However, the engine won't turn over. It clunks, but nothing. Is there some failsafe thing without the drive belt installed to prevent the engine from starting? It's the petrol engine one (no idea on capacity). Thanks!

Uh-oh... have a peek under the timing belt cover because you often find that the alt belt went inside and wrecked everything. As far as I know, there is no failsafe stopping it turning with the aux belt off, but a piston touching a valve will :(

Yeah, I think that's what it will be. I haven't heard of a failsafe, but you never know with these French engines.

It's crazy a shredded drive belt can affect running of the cam belt.

The belt was off for less than a second, and then terminality on the starting. It stopped dead.

I've been commissioned to have a go at it, even though it's stuck at the side of a busy road, I have no means of moving it to a safer location, and I can't even afford a drive belt at the moment.

I'm going to pass on it as it'll be much less than 'mates rates', and I just couldn't bare doing all that. My hands were caked in black oil just from removing the belt cord from the pulleys. No thanks.
