A caravan breaker may be able to sort you out with a decent s/h fridge. Fuel cats are a waste of time. Do you lob valve seal recession inhibitor in with the pez?

nope - but I probably should - his van had a Fuel Cat fitted 10 years ago and I don't trust it! - would perhaps explain some of the volume of the bag o'spannaz that comes out of the rocker cover!

Almost cetainly suffering from valve seat knackerment, you can waste them in about 300 miles if you're unlucky and you don't use a decent additive.. Lob on an unleaded head, there's usually a couple on ebay.

I suspect you are right.

Scaryoldcortina has kindly offered me a B series he has lying around. I think my plan will be to keep the current engine in situ at the moment and if SOC is still ok with his offer, collect it off him and then drop it into the sherpa in the Autumn. I'mm then set my engine up in the shed and strip it down and rebuild it. It's done nearly 100k so it wouldn't hurt and much of the tappet noise will be from the wear to the rocker which, of course, is buried deep inside the block

You might find that the suspected tappet reacket is a bit of valve malarkey bouncing around in there...............

Noisey tappets are not a sign of valve seat regression.........when that happens the clearance will get smaller until it gets to nothing........then it holds the valve open and causes loss of compression and maybe will burn the valve out. IF this happens the fix is to convert the head to unleaded with hardened seat and new exhaust valves......so you might as well wait until it happens. BTW the rocker shaft is only under the cover so woth checking when you fit the new cover. Also note that if the rocker cover is pulled down too hard it can make the tappets sound noisey as the rocker will amplify the sound.

Also K seal won't fix a blow between the cylinders cause their ain't no water there! Head gasket is an easy job on this anyway......all you'll need is a bike spanner and a screwdriver........

yup HG wise I think that the break wasn't between 2 and 3 as the improvement since the K seal is significant. I am suspecting that the low compression on Cyl 3 is due to a worn valve seat. This is confirmed I think by the differences in the low compression on each cyl which was large were there a break between them then the compression readings would have been closer togther- I suspect that 2 was bust through the coolant/oil jacket and that 3 is low anyway due to compression.

Will be dropping an UL head on the rebuild I will do - at the moment the engine is good for this summer - the only 3 planned trips are to Inverary and back (180 miles), Beadnel in Northumbria (130 miles) and a few trips to the beach in East Lothian. I'll fit a new rad when I get the chance.

leccy ignition is going in this week which will hopefully make a significant difference
