A frames, and VOSA

I'm resurrecting this thread as I've just had a tow hitch fitted to my Citroen Xantia! While waiting for the guy to fit it all together I had a chat with the guy in the office about A frames. I asked his advice about what you can and can't tow, what the maximum weights are etc. He was very helpful and had a book of every car ever made (well, almost!) with its maximum towing weights. My Citroen's limits are 1.1 tonnes on a braked trailer & 650Kg for an un-braked trailer. His comments about an A frame were interesting though... He told me that an A frame is for recovery only and that if used on a motorway can only be used to recover a vehicle to the next junction, when you should leave the motorway. He didn't explain how far you can use one WITHOUT going on a motorway, though! Sounds odd, but I have heard that the RAC are obliged to recover you off the motorway, even if you don't have the recovery option. Any thoughts out there in Autoshiteland?

Anyway, I'll be testing my towing skills once again with Torsten 2001 over the next few days; we'll keep you all informed!

I think even the basic cover with AA and RAC gets you towed off the motorway. You just won't get a tow all the way home if AA man can't fix it.
