Passat tdi question

94 Passat tdi, brilliant in every respect, apart from minor niggle. On starting from cold, tickover is rough.If you raise the revs slightly. it's fine. The glow plug light goes out after about 3 seconds of first switching on the ignition.Also ticks over when warm at about 900 rpm, is this about right?

Any thoughts?

sounds about right to me, they all tickover rough for a few seconds from what I've experienced, though a good service won't hurt.

900rpm is correct

they have hydraulic tappets that can take a couple of seconds to adjust

I can't say that mine was particularly rough when cold though, I mean it is a fairly diesely diesel if you know what I mean but the idle was always steady even from cold

ours is abit knockie first thing in morning esp if its freezin'

Throw some injector cleaner through it, decent stuff like 'Forte'.
