WMA to DSS (No A/S content!)

I know there are some geniuses (genii?) on here with computers and I wondered if anyone can help.

I have to to dictate reports onto a digital voice recorder and e mail them for typing. I got an Olympus WS-450 recorder and that records in .WMA format. However I have been told that they must be in .dss format. I've been through the internet but can't find a way of converting them. Olympus's site is not that helpful either. Any ideas?

Thanks.

OK, I might be of some use here.

Back in the bad old days of 2005, I had the reverse problem when I was head of Production at Bailrigg FM. We had Olympus kit which would only play in the DSS proprietory format. I got around this by playing DSSoft through the mixing desk with Audition running in the background.

However, Olympus seems to have woken up to the fact that there are other formats that are less obscure. There are several pieces of software that will open SP DSS (such as NCH Switch), but not convert to it.

The answer seems to be elswewhere. At the moment I'm on an old Dell laptop (one the numerous reasons I haven't been around for a little while) that doesn't have .NET installed, so while that installs, you might want to have a look at this link, which suggests the piece of software for download here can convert WMA to DSS.

Try downloading the 'Free Audio Convertor' software listed at the bottom. It sounds bang on your remit. I will try it as soon as .NET has finished downloading.

Thanks fellas. It's been partially resolved now, although Outlook Express can't handle the file attachments!

Shove them into a zip or rar archive and then send them.

If it gets too arsey, record the sound file onto tape and then 'redigitize' back into PC onto whatever file format.
