whats in a ford c3 autobox??????

i was a bit bored this afternoon, so i reverted to my childhood and took something apart, just to see whats in it and with no intention of putting it back together

 

i choose a Ford C3 autobox as i have 3 of them, and this one has been unused for a couple of years and its condition is known. Plus ive always been told that autoboxs contain mysterious things known only to merlin and freemasons, so i thought i'd find out

 

with the essex bellhousing off, most of the removed stuff just pulls out:

 

 

and then with the sump and tailshaft off, and 70 million bolts and spacers and circlips and gaskets later...

Have you thought of putting a blob of mercury in that wibbly bit and covering it over with glass? Hours of fun.

one thing i forgot to mention: no matter how many times you think a c3 is empty of ATF, theres always some more. how you would change the atf in a c3 is beyond me, some of it remains whatever you do

I like those pictures. To me it doesn't seem to have as many components as I would have imagined - though when it comes to doing this to my Capri's auto box, no doubt it'll become overwhelming.

 

I guess if you're bored another day, you can put the thing back together again?

no thanks - when i took the filter and plate off the bottom, loads of springs fell out - fck knows where they are supposed to go - but its a scrap box anyway - far too complicated to diagnose a problem by dismantling. if your c3 goes tits up - my advise is to replace it
