Note to shelf - get shares in masking tape company ! πŸ˜‚πŸ‘

Early on you gave the impression that you would almost be doing this a panel at a time, so bit surprised to see your hitting the whole car at once.

Waiting to see if you are going for green, what shade, and solid colour or candy over silver.

Hope the weather holds for you

Yup, plans change.Β
Β

If you look at the damage done when I removed the yellow line……

It just made sense to create a safer break line.Β
Β

Door strips and bumper edges will hopefully work. Β
Β

See below πŸ˜‰

Thursday morning 10.50 AM is when the paint hit the test card.Β

Getting the gun set up is not a dark art, but it is…..

Getting Air, Paint, Fan to all happen at the right ratio is about settings and also a bit of common sense. None of which I happen to have in the right ratio.Β

Β

So I muddled along and started to paint the car that had been stood in the sun, warming up.Β

Β

My ambient temperature thermometer only showed 13’C on the front doorframe of the garage, in the shade, with a breeze constantly moving air.Β

Β

But I was not going to wait…….

Β

Noooooo……. Mr Impatient. Β

Β

So I painted and painted.Β

Β

Nearly 2 liters of paint used.Β

Β

A total of three coats of silver.Β

Β

Not perfect, but a great result.Β

Β

Typically……….

Β

A crisis presented itself too.Β

Β

Look carefully at the fender damageΒ

Β

Yup….. Loose overall smudged it REPEATEDLY.Β

Β

But after exhausting my swear diary and filling the swear jar with many coins……

Β

You can see the fender repair worked.Β

Β

Eventually finished the painting and cleaned my tools.Β

Β

Remember the way I had masked the drivers door so it could be opened and the car driven up to the house??Β

Β

I removed the pillow cases draped in the engine bay, and drive up to the house to give the car almost 4 hours in the sun.Β

Β

By 5.00pm I draped some old duvet covers over it and used a breathable caravan cover Mickey had discarded 3 years ago, to cover it ovrrnight.Β

Β

Friday weather was forecast to be warm enough to allow it to dry some more.Β

Β

Of course a restless night later, I cautiously looked under the covers on the hood at 08.00 and that paint had not reacted……… pheww !!!

Β

By 10.00am the heavy fog had lifted and I uncovered the car.Β

Β

Inspected all surfaces and found that at that point, none of the paint had reacted…….., Thank goodness.Β

Β

Β

You will see how the colour actually changes in different angles and intensity of light.Β

Β

So now we have a car that the top half is silver.Β

Β

Β

Back to the paint shop tomorrow morning to get something blue.Β

Β

No idea what tone or colour it would be.Β

Β

Β

Yet.Β

Β

Β

Best you bring the cash fast before it isn’t in one colour.Β
Β

This silver really looks great on it.Β
Β

Almost like fresh aluminium in the sunlightΒ

Posted

So what do we do next when the paint has dried successfully??Β
Β

Yup, of course…… Throw more paint at it.Β
Β

You know something has to go wrong too…..

Β

Them’s the rules.Β
Β

So……

Β

Here we go.Β
Β

I bought some fresh lace curtains a while ago.Β
Β

My vision was to create two panels with a racing stripe dividing them.Β
Β

Whatcha fink team ??Β
Β

Β

Β

So the lace curtain…..??

Β

I don’t think most people have a real clue what preparation is needed.Β

Β

My initial plan was to create two panels longitudinally over the roof.Β

With a colour band down the centre, the same as was going around the roof edge above the non-existent rain gutters and window rubber.Β

Β

Painting needs to be done in reverse, whatever goes on first is exposed last etc.Β

You need to measure in, lay pin stripes and then mask out the parts that don’t get painted.Β

Once all the masking is done, you lay the lace over and cut to size, followed by anchoring it down, because the air pressure will lift it and screw up the pattern when you paint.Β

Β

While inspecting that initial lay out for two panels, I realised it had a scalloped end, which would look much better as a single edge, than split up. So despite being marked out, I aborted it. Sticking to a single panel.Β

Β

This was a great decision for me to make, despite my plans as the results speak for themselves.Β

Β

Once cut to shape and tacked down, I chose two colours that I wanted to use.Β

Β

Many people use black, with a background, but my dominant colour would be blues.Β

Β

Hopefully the photodump tells the rest of the story.Β

Β

Β

I also followed up with the C-Pillars.Β

Β

More about this later.Β

Fantastic. The pin stripe around the edge really sets it off whilst being a great nod to the time, effort and skill that's gone in so far! Lovely stuff.

Is that the roof finished or do you have some more layers to add to it?

When you look at most Lowrider styled cars and trucks, the C-pillar’s are often decorated or painted really nicely.Β

Β

Because they are WIIIIDE !!

Β

When GM created the family of bodies that included the Oldsmobile, they designed a magnificent greenhouse, loads of glass and excellent visibility.Β

Β

But……. The C-Pillars were slimmed right down to suit the look of these cars.Β

Β

Leaving them with minimal surface area to decorate.Β

Β

So I had been planning for a while, how to deal with them, since buying the car at the end of December.Β

Β

Β

Once the lace was painted and unmasked, I tried one design, then realised it was super shit.Β

Β

Painted over it and started again.Β

Β

This time over two hours of prepping and trying to get the fishnet stocking to lay out in a way that I could live with.Β

Β

Ultimately…..

Β

It failed and I was back to the β€œDragon scales” which I had started with.Β

I had to make a new, much longer stencil to run the full length of thr C-pillar.Β

Β

I also called 80 year old Micky around to come hold the cat food cardboard box cutout stencil, because of the curve in the pillar. One needs three or four hands to make it tidy.Β

Β

I had also masked in some red and silver pinstripes on the top and bottom to create cutoff lines, which in retrospect, are right, but the red is too powerful.Β

Β

Still……

Β

I am happy with this design.Β

Β

Next up…..

Β

A two day job.Β

Β

Keeping in mind prep and layout is a big part of all this.Β

Β

Ready ?Β

As a side note……

Weather forecast has suggested that I will not be painting much for a week.Β

I have no clue how many people actually look at these posts on my threads.Β

Β

Obviously many many parasites who contribute nothing. Ever.

Β

Β The conversations and contributions from those who take a moment to make comments, suggestions, question my actions, and motivate me to continue working on my random projects and sharing the wins and losses are in part responsible for this cars progress and process.Β

Β

I do appreciate and thank you all.Β

Β

Β

Back to the car and lowrider inspired paint schemes that are currently unfolding.Β

Β

Visualisation, lay out and masking is a deceptively time consuming process.Β

Β

The photos and videos Β (I have not created or edited together a video for a few weeks because I am tired of this shit by the time I get to pack away tools at 5.00pm) Β are deceptive. Not showing the three steps forward and two steps back that happens sometimes. Β

Β

So getting onto planning, laying out and masking up the boot after the roof, actually took quite a few hours. Not one or two, but I was happy with how it came out eventually.Β

Β

Β

I don’t think people realise how much measurement, replication, readjustment goes into it.Β

Β

So this was the pics of the masking process.Β

Β

I decided to use some diagonal lines to contradict the large, soft jellymould curves of the Oldsmobile.Β

Β

Stepping back from it and walking by, looking from different directions led me to Β restart completely, twice.Β

Β

And then I was happy.Β

Β

In order to fill the masked up panels, a lot of thought and experimenting goes into making look right.Β

Keeping in mind, what materials, resources, location, weather and other variables.Β

So making and buying stencils is a big part of it.Β

Then the β€œtexture” of the stencils needs to either compliment or clash with each other, intentionally.Β

Redoing the C-Pillars three times and still not being completely satisfied, is a good example. Future Grizz has another section that has had four, that is 4 iterations that got worse each time. I just had to ive up and step away from it in the end.Β

Back to stencils and textures.Β

Yesterday we had zero work weather, so I went food shopping and stopped at β€œThe Range” (Google it world) and went into the hobby and art section and bought a bunch of stuff including wooden cutout shapes.Β

Some may or may not be used.Β

I have to wait and see.Β

So here’s a few bitsΒ

PS. You also have to try them out and practice.Β

Using flat, hard surfaces on curved surfaces will always challenge you and the paint is pressurised, so it gets in everywhere.Β

I fail to see how my responses to your antics can be used as justification for your actionsΒ

Since you seem to be going all in with the stencil work, might it be an idea to invest in a laser cutter, enabling you to create your own stencils, would also open a whole new realm of grizz makes, also possibly use adhesive backed vinyl, then you won't have to paint your nailsΒ

Masking all done on the boot/trunk lid, it was time to figure out what designs and colours to use.Β

Β

I like contrast in both colours and textures.Β

Β

So I created some stencils that have been seen already.Β

Β

There’s a few recurring themes that you see in Lowrider art that I have always loved.Β

Β

Fish scales, (I have now of course also created Dragon scales)Β

Sunrise fades

Never ending lines

Lace paint obviouslyΒ

Geometric shapes repeatingΒ

Multiple coloursΒ

Β

So that brings us to actual pattern and painting.Β

Β

I started with a four colour panoramic sunrise. Usually they are done as a fan shape of the likes of large C-Pillars.Β

Β

Masking up the other panels, I kept moving the masking around so that I could paint one panel at a time, without overspray on the rest of the car or panels.Β

Β

Fish scales next.Β

Β

Weirdly, they were a challenge too.Β

Β

You will see the length of the stencil, which means holding it down in a way the paint lands where you want it, rather than blowing under or over.Β

Happy with that result, including the accentuating of the pinstripes around the panels.Β

Β

My next one was possibly the hardest to choose and commit to. Halloween style spider webs. Also getting them to look the same meant a bit of searching for a duplicate.Β

Β

Colour matching the lace on the roof.Β

Β

So far, so good.Β

Β

Β

I will do a second part to this lot for the last piece, which I know was the most difficult and complex part of the job.Β

Β

Β

Back in a bit.Β
