I'd gathered the purpose of the empty case and I realise you'd connect at the PCB end. What I'm not sure about is if the tape head would give you noise if you left it connected.

ah....of course I should have clicked....mind that would still allow ordinary tapes to play if required

Exactly that!, occasionally I like to listen to Led Zep on tape :DThere is some noise from the tape motor with the mp3 going but it is not really noticeable. The best way would be to disconnect the tape head completely, with the unit apart you can just switch the leaver the cassette would usually hit. This does away with the need for the blank cassette.
