Ever been really disappointed with a car?

Also testdrove an E30 318IS. Was quite looking forward to it as so many people go on about how great they are.. but it just seemed a bit slow/boring. I'm sure if I owned it I could get into fun with it, but for that type of car it felt too slow.

Similar experience for me with E30s - not a 318iS, but a few 320is. These came highly recommended from a bunch of people I know and respect on matters automotive, so I was expecting big things, but I couldn't get past how gutless in the mid-range all of the examples I tried were - needed to keep the loud pedal nailed to the firewall to make halfway-decent progress. I thought the engine itself was pretty bland and characterless as well - Pog will probably come steaming in with a defence at this point, but I just couldn't see the appeal personally.

Same here, E30 Touring 320. Slow and crappy handling. I walked away from that one. It was also advertised as having no rust, which I suppose was true in a way as there was just a big hole in the sill; all the rust had fallen out.

I had a bader-matic e30 320i touring a few years ago. If you pinned the accelerator to the floor, it went pretty well. More gentle proddings resulted in negligible acceleration, which meant I was either late or drove like a twat. Either way, the economy was terrible. Smooth progress and build quality didn't make up for this.
