Being too Specific when looking for a car

Bucking the trend here but I usually have no preconceived idea of anything about my "next" purchase. Often I wake up

With no intention of buying a car and by that evening one has been bought. This isn't a boast it's more the admission of a problem!

I'd consider having a problem if I wouldn't buy cars like this.

Besides, what I am doing is none of my business anyway. Since when am I responsible for my actions?

Apart from my Cortina estate and the Polo breadvans, I've never really gone out looking to buy a specific car.

Sometimes I've had some sort of criteria, such as a big Volvo-type thing suitable for a house move (which is how I wound up going to bloody Donegal for a bodged XM estate) but the vast majority have just been whatever happened to be in Auto Trader/on Gumtree at that precise moment and best fitted my limited budget.

For the last three cars (all Lagunas) I've gone from having no intention of acquiring another car that morning, to having them on the driveway that evening. Total opportunism. Being very cheap helps, mind.

I do have preferred colours and trim levels, but it wouldn't be much of a sticking point for me.

Interesting to read the breadth of opinion here, though!

My current cars, the 407 coupe I was wanting a Citroen c6, so got the engine and gearbox, my 205 was an impulse just because I liked it and had good provenance, the xantia I wanted an xud with Bosch pump, a mate advertised his xantia so I bought it, my pug 107 was the only planned one. The xantia was bought for a stopgap for the 407 which was fucked 6 months ago and still is, the 107 is a workhorse, the 205 my baby.

I did this a while back and got lucky at the begining of this year. 4 years ago I bought an early mk1 Saxo VTS as a bit of nostalgia (it's completely standard, I ain't one of them..) upon buying an original launch brochure I noticed it listed a colour I'd never seen before, "Fijian Blue" After lots of research I eventually found old photos of two cars. Both of them long scrapped.

Begining of this year I finally found one. Mega league rotten and abused but it's mine now and the only known one in existence. Just so happens to be pre-production as well, the only known 1996 built car other than one of the original press cars. Patience pays off!

Thought I would update this as I have bought a car! The one nearby in Cornwall sold before I could get there as I was away for the weekend- the one Jazoli posted appeared on EBay with more pictures and had rusty wings so no good.

So to reiterate - I was looking for an Inky blue b5.5 Passat tdi sport estate with low miles and no rust... this seems to not exist anymore so I ended up buying a 2007 Skoda Octavia vrs tdi estate, one for the modern section I think!
