Biggles and the Mystery of the Illuminated Vanity Mirrors

I'm slightly peeved but also intrigued to the same extent as to why this isn't working, although it's probably something obvious.  I'm attempting to put the sunvisors from my 405 STI, which have rather fetching illuminated vanity mirrors and look awfully posh, into the 405 GTX daily.  They all fit fine but the lights don't work on them.  Inspecting the brackets and contacts each end I find this:

The STI has the following connectors:

This is where it's screwed to the roof - no wires here

This is what the sunvisor end looks like, obviously some sort of contact here:

This is the other end with what looks like a contact around it:

And this is where the sunvisor connects into in the other side of the sunroof, that looks like some sort of contact too:

Now here's the GTX (car without illuminated sunvisors)

Roof mounting looks the same:

Sunvisor end, doesn't have the contact the STI one does:

Now the GTX also has a similar contact where the sunvisor slots into, allbeit maybe it's a bit smaller?

I haven't got a picture of the other end of the visor without the illuminated mirror, but basically it looks the same though without the circular contacts going around it.

Now, why can't I just put the illuminated ones into the other car?  Would it be something advanced like wiring looms/ relays etc?

I think the end that doesn't appear to have a contact might actually by the earth, and it does it through the screw rather than the pole that sticks up.

So if that's true, and there's a contact the other end, then yeah you're probably looking for a missing fuse. I doubt it'd be relay unless you've got 200W halogens up there.

However a quick google shows it's F30 which also covers indicators, electric mirrors and lights on buzzers amongst other things so you'd probably know if that was missing.

Have you got a multimeter you can put to that spring contact, and a good earth such as a door pin?

Test it for resistance - high means this is 12v, low means it's earth.

If you think from there it's 12v, then check it for voltage with the ignition on.

Use the zoom - you should have a brown wire coming from Fuse 30 which goes to both the map light, and vanity mirrors. Right hand side, just above centre, item 93 is the vanity mirror.

Do you have a map light? If not I guess this wire may have been omitted from the poverty model. Glovebox illumination is the same fuse, but a different (green) wire.

Interesting, that fuse must be working as the map reading light (which both cars have) is certainly working.  It's actually right next to that contact the sunvisor slots into.  Perhaps I'll need to drop down the console with the map reading light in and see if there's a brown wire which joins on to the contact.
