That was my first thought but both battery and alternator are in fine fettle. It seems to have started when I plugged in the fault code reader and it wouldn't see it, it worked fine the first few times I used it.

I have absolutely nothing working on the clocks of my 330D which is strange as one day all was fine next day nowt,

So from the above conversation I can't just stick another set in ?

It'll prove whether or not your cluster is fubared or there is some other issue. For a fiver, it's a worthwhile diagnostic procedure.

I'd get your battery tested, just because it starts the car doesn't necessarily mean it's in peak condition, as a few have mentioned these are classic shagged battery symptoms, usually accompanied by the words, 'the battery's fine' or similar.

Even if you go to a local supplier it's not likely to cost anything to get it tested.

Already done, I have a professional charge/ discharge unit (used to race electric cars I hand built so have spent more hours testing batteries than I care to remember). Battery is fine, alternator is good as well.

Some progress, but two steps forward two back unfortunately. The new dash arrived today, once fitted it was fine from the start, so the old one definitely has issues. Result, well not entirely as now the asc and brake warning light are permanently on. Could this be a carry over from the last car the dash was in? Or is something else amiss?

I may have sussed it out, a quick look made me think the clocks were the same but on closer inspection they are one number out, 1031098005 as opposed to 1031098105, they were only £5 and seem to have proved that the instruments are at fault so no great loss. Found another set which will be on their way to me soon.

The cluster also needs coded to the car, but everything works without it being coded. You just get the tamper dot on and if the car has DSC, sometimes that lights up.

Nice one, I forgot about that. Thankfully I hadn't bought another set yet, PM incoming!
