Any recommendations where to buy good quality engine oil at a reasonable price? I need 7.5 litres of 10w30 semi synth to do an oil change on the new Granvia so I'm gonna be using alot of oil. I tend to use Millers or Fuchs on my Subaru but that'll get quite pricey for the bus. Any suggestions on a decent oil that isn't so expensive?

10/30 semi is an unusual spec in the U.K and therefore a bit pricey . Being jap I expect 10/40 semi will be fine . I use quantum synta . It's a good spec oil made my either Castrol or Fuchs.

Opie Oils is all I use, unless absolutely desperate. Decent website too..

I find that the Viscol stuff that Home Bargains sells is more than up to the job of keeping my Swedes lubricated ^^

That's what's specified in the handbook, 10w30. Have seen that Quantum brand before, will look into it thanks :)

That's what I use in my Legacy too, fully synth, but the Granvia has 10w30 specified in the handbook, or 5w30 but I think that might be a bit thin for an old diesel.

I think Quantum Oil is Vw's own brand. It was when I ran a PD Polo anyway, I used to get it from TPS.

Beginning to see that now. Most of the 10w30 oils I've seen seem to be for bikes so 10w40 it may well need to be, or 5w30 as per the sticker but yeah it's done a fair amount of miles so thicker oil probably best. Thanks chaps :)

I use a decent quality full synthetic 5w40 in our two almost moderns (2002 Outback H6 and 2005 Landcruiser) and the much older W124, that grade is within specs in the handbook for those and most cars we here are likely to own, is easily available from the usual sources and i buy it by the 20/25 litre packs (sometimes 4x5 litre) whenever i see it on offer whenever i'm starting to run out.

Neither car uses anything more than about 1/2 a pint between changes, and the LC continues to run sweeter and quieter plus the all important oil pick up strainer in the sump is clean as a whistle.

Over the last 5/10 years its been Millers, Morris's, Fuchs and just started yesterday on the 48 litres Shell Helix Ultra that i got from Opie in their last sale.

I don't leave it in much beyond 3000 miles anyway so full synth might be overkill, but when on offer its no more expensive than standard mineral/semi so why not, oil's a bloody lot cheaper than new mechanical parts and a lot easier to fit.

If of any interest, Premier Factors via ebay are doing a ''clearance'' on the LC's (WX7175) oil filters, good quality those Wix's for about £6.50  where good brands of that filter are usually £12+ and even Mann's well over £8 at CP4L, so might be worth having a poke nose see if they have other part numbers up for the right price, just ordered another half a dozen.

Do you happen to have a link to that eBay store? Had a look but can't find it. The Granvia uses the same engine as some Land Cruiser and HiLux so they may have filters for mine, and I haven't ordered the filter from Toyota yet, which was about 20 quid with the VAT. Not sure what aftermarket brands are good to use for the bus yet so cheers for the heads up :)

I'm bloody useless at putting links on this site, but the item number for my filter is 351778509981, that will put you onto premier-factors.

Carparts4less (part of europcarparts) do Mann filters at the right price, often cheaper if you order via website or even click and collect, though they don't always deliver the correct parts has been my experience, and no doubt GSF is a close competitor on price.

I use Mann or Wix or Mahle or K&N aftermarket filters whenever possible, others will no doubt have other favourites.

Used to buy Crosland when they were made in Nottingham, i don't buy them any more.

Interestingly only K&N are suitable for the Mrs' H6 Outback, the shape of the Mann jobbies stamping leaves only about two turns of thread holding the filter on, sod that, so i bought a batch of K&N's when half price from CP4L.

I spent quite a while perusing some Youtube vidoes (mostly from the USA) where other bods as bonkers as we are dissected lots of different filters to compare construction, its quite an eye opener, not saying my preference of the four are by any means the best or all i would buy, but short of paying nearly 3X the price from the main dealer they'll do me.
