Longblackcoat Posted June 9, 2017 Posted June 9, 2017 Somewhat counter to my predictions, the Sherpa of Doom is actually OK to drive. Brakes a bit meh, steering a bit woolly, but it is after all more than a third of a century old and despite being QUITE LOUD AT SPEED it's rather a lovable old bus. Apart from its insatiable demand for unleaded and the absolute refusal to take more than 45 litres, that is.The bike is mintier than anything Trebor have yet produced and the engine started with even the most diffident of prods on the starter. It's a lovely little thing; I'd probably stick it in a display case and polish it 'cos it's so dinky and perfect, but doubtless BV will ride it and let it get all knackered. Guest Breadvan72 Posted June 10, 2017 Posted June 10, 2017 Feel free to pop in to North Country ,near Redruth for a cuppa guys This was a v kind invitation. If not for the fuel idiocy, we would have liked to accept, but time was against us owing to being doofuses. The whole gig took about twelve hours, stops included, and for LBC add another hour and a half for the there and back again from and to Watford. The round trip from my place to the bike place and back again was about 545 miles. The van ran effortlessly so long as it had petrol in it. I think that it is really quite a good thing to drive, although my ears are still ringing a bit this morning. The quest for an overdrive gear box continues. Reginald K Dangletrousers has very kindly offered a five speeder, although I have a mild yen for the actual flicky switchy six speeder Laycock rig. Junkman 1
richardthestag Posted June 10, 2017 Posted June 10, 2017 I TOTEZ Needs this - Haz J-Type overdrive in the Staaag and flicky switch on top of the Eiffel Tower gearstick Rather theatrical and very practical
Felly Magic Posted June 10, 2017 Posted June 10, 2017 The old D reg Transit Di 15 seater minibus at my comprehensive school had the GKN overdrive, you need to find a dead Triumph Splitarse or Dolloshite being brokificated. I know a few Sherpa coupe apologists and Morris Marxist lickers have been fitting Ford type 9's to their vehicles
Felly Magic Posted June 10, 2017 Posted June 10, 2017 One from a Sherpa coupe/cabrio do? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MGB-1972-Gearbox-4-Syncro-Laycock-LH-type-Overdrive-/162520278517?hash=item25d6f6a5f5:g:5AQAAOSwurZZHWGi
Guest Breadvan72 Posted June 11, 2017 Posted June 11, 2017 As far as I can tell from internet lookage uppage, one of those gearboxes from a B series engined heap would fit on an O Series. I might try to find one from later than 1972, however, because the Laycock (GKN) overdrives became more reliable over time.
Guest Breadvan72 Posted June 11, 2017 Posted June 11, 2017 Haz J-Type overdrive in the Staaag and flicky switch on top of the Eiffel Tower gearstick Rather theatrical and very practical Ditto in Dolly, although I cannot remember which letter of Laycock it has, but you effectively get a six speed box and passengers are weirdly impressed by the clicky button. richardthestag 1
Guest Breadvan72 Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 I have just bought an MGB overdrive box for a whole 120 quid. I will collect it using either the van or my UMM. The gearbox is in Hook, Hants, an hour's drive away from me. The Moog and CGSB 2
Junkman Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 So two and a half hours with a Van or an UMM. Sigmund Fraud 1
Guest Breadvan72 Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 I'm not Lewis Hamilton, you know. Call it four hours each way, and blood stained ears. The Moog 1
richardthestag Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Ditto in Dolly, although I cannot remember which letter of Laycock it has, but you effectively get a six speed box and passengers are weirdly impressed by the clicky button. should be J-type which are smoother in operation. A type on early stags jolt on engage and disengage which can be avoided by using the clutch well done of the mg o/d box what does it need? rebuild or lob it in and see what happens?
