Pete, I have to say my sympathy for your Avis experience does not exist. The wonderful Espero and stunning Leganza are amongst the finest cars on my Christmas list. Sounds like you were living the dream to me!What else did you get to run around in, a Hyundai Sonata V6? Specifically the late 90s onwards one with "S O N A T A" on a strip on the back. Or a Kia Clarus "Executive" perhaps?I'm hugely jealous. Just think about all those fake bits of walnut, green digital clocks and lights on "ding" noises, all awaiting appreciation which was not forthcoming - only scorn and hatred.I'm going to have a bit of a drink now. It would be best if no one disturbed me for a little while.

Unfortunately, my company wheels at the time were mainly Volvo V70s or Merc E's, but on really stunningly special days I did indeed get to drive the occasional Sonata V6. Avis were really pushing the boat out with their forays into shite in those days. I was lucky enough to be running an 'implant' which meant I was only allowed to rent out cars fitted with both ABS and Airbags. Daewoo, Kia, Hyundai and Proton were all fitting almost everything with the bits that fitted the bill so I got to drive the latest in Korean tat. The Kia Shuma stood out even then as a true Shite, fitted from new with those glorious creaks that normally only appear after 200,000 Baghdad minicab miles, with that special judder that most European cars need a knackered DMF to emulate, and shocks that can't deal with any type of road imperfection whatsoever. The Shuma tended to leave the factory with that 'somewhere behind the dash' rattle that it nornally takes at least two attempts to bodge in a cab radio by the YTS to get. Four doors, a huge boot and rear legroom suitable only for Douglas Bader were other memorable features. Oh, they had an electric aerial on the N/S/R wing that would snap if you opened the boot with the radio switched on.... that was a class bit of design on the early ones.

Apolgies for being a thickie  but what is a DMF? Pete and Ted have both referred to it ...

Did have a look ... Decayed, Missing or Filled sounds promising

BTW, as Bono's ugly mug faced me on this link, can I nominate him to go in the RANT thread. Probably enough been written/said about him already

! I leave this forum for a few days and there's a big long discussion to catch up on!I don't hate anything pre 1990s. I find silver new German cars to be wholly overrated and sickeningly common. I really HATE German 'performance' 4x4s like the fugly Ceyenne thing or the thorougly gay VW version of that..I USED to really dislike Fords and anything 'ordinary' back as a kid in the late 80s as I always found the owners of these more than anything slagged off my beloved Citroens the most! and I just couldn't see what was so good about the two a penny Cortinas of the day. But now! I'll be pleased to see a surviving 'Tina as much as a surviving '69 Colt or something rare and underrated.I really don't like anything new - the Toyota Prius is a top dislike tho and followed closely by the MINI - I wouldn't mind it so much if there wasn't one going past every two seconds...New Citroens are really disappointing pseudo-German sell outs.. Pugs are just plain ugly.Worst car I ever drove was a Diesel Golf Mk4 - it was plain nasty feeling - gloomy interior and the worst ride and handling ever.Funniest vehicle driven was a shagged E reg petrol(!) Transit with a welded over rear window and second gear you had to hold in by hand! it was truly shit - went thru a tank of petrol a day but was hilarious so not hated.I'd happily drive anything old and interesting tho.
