Removing paint spots?

Recommended Posts

The wife has just bought a newish car and it has various grey paint spots on one side, the paint is thick like the type used on car dealership workshop floors and isn,t just rattle can paint overspray,so I have tried white spirit, compound, various polishes I have, thinners and even clay bar which thinned the dots down but still they wont shift...

Any other ideas?strange thing is that on the lower wing it has paint splats that are consistant with driving through something but on the 2 doors its just dots not splats, its a Clio 4 so don't trust there being to many coats of paint on it....

You could try taking it to a car paint shop and asking for some advice. I had a similar problem on a car, it must have been close to where someone was painting a house with white paint on a windy day, spots all over it. If you are DIY'ing it, my advice would be to start somewhere low down where it will not be noticed. Like a lower wing, you can then use a rattle can to touch things in if it does not go well for you. If thinners will not get it off, then try 1200 grade wet and dry, and buff the paint afterwards to bring the shine back. The problem with thinners is that it tends to dissolve the underlying paint as well as the spots, if it is left on too long. Don;t try to do the whole car in one day, just one panel each day.

You will need lots of patience, its a learning curve, finding  out what works for you.

You could start with milder solvents like turps, white spirit, lighter fluid, and maybe get lucky.
