Well.. this is the engine:

Not looking so great is it. Oil slowly seeping ouf of the rocker box, dripping out of the bottom of the engine and not topped up in the 2+ years we've had it... well until yesterday anyway... when due to a long journey i felt compelled to give it a fighting chance.

This is the car:

Yup, a Honda Civic 1.4 auto. You might associate Honda with being the indestructible and to a point, I'd slightly agree but I've never liked this car. It's been a dog from the day we got it. Previously owned by a foreign doctor who was proud to admit that he'd done nothing to it for over two years the missus then declared "I'll have it" just seconds after i've poliltely said "I'll wait at the car" (the other car we had at the time). She didn't take the hint and still decided to take it. He told us the brakes needed doing... he didn't tell us that the grinding sound was a bent drive shaft OR buggered axle in the gearbox that has pressure applied against it when the brakes are applied (and yes, when watching with the wheel off, the caliper starts flying sideways once per revolution - with new discs and pads - and listening to it, the noise is coming from the axle at the back of the gearbox).

Anyway we've had the old shit for over two years and after the mechanic determined the noise was a buggered bearing (which of course it wasn't only he didn't trust me who knew the car against his expertise) which cost the missus £160 to replace, she declared "I'm not spending anymore on this car". Well with an attitude like that and me disliking it anyway... you can imagine it didn't take long for it to start deteriorating.

Well it's always had two bumpers that are half hanging off from where a previous owner has attempted to take on the fucking world with it but one night it came home with something extra:

Fucker had a mishap didn't it and put a dent in it behind the wheel right in the area where it didn't really need it by the dodgy driveshaft. Well as luck would have it the boot leaks, the blower motor also leaks, the car stinks of damp, it's got covered in mud inside, there's still half a xmas tree on the back seat, a ton of rubbish in the passenger footwell, oil stains on another seat (don't ask) and well.. it's generally an old shit.

So yesterday I reluctantly had to drive somewhere 160 miles away and back. We'd tried desperately to find another car but nothing turned up and the only car we did find that was perfect someone literally bought just 2 minutes before we got there so we were stuck with this old pile of impending doom.

I set off... i was a tad nervous it must be said... but i got to the first services on the motorway and appreciated that i was still alive. Carried on... and after having seen some magnificent dual carriageway countryside I actually got there - intact! Whatsmore the car had its usual oodles of power from the engine - somewhat strange considering everything else about it is fucked. Anyway it had no troubles using kickdown or overtaking twats on the motorway. To my total surprise it even did the 160 mile journey back home too. I'll probably recover from the rotten seat and air in a year or two but i actually bloomin made it - there and back in a car thats worthy of a middle of some obscure unheard of country top gear mission. I reckon even Clarkson would admire it.

Shame really... a banger racer is collecting it next week to smash it to shit for its loyalty..

No good deed goes unpunished. Long live another old Honda, may it rust in place.
