Velvet Shitemine: June '79

Clearing out the mysterious cellars of West Bridgford Library Indiana Jones unearths not just one, but TWO local magazines which record a Lost World more weird than any of those of the Ancient Egyptians, Aztecs or Babylonians... It is Nottingham in the Summer of 1979:

Let us travel back to that heroic Age. We will need somewhere to live while we're there so, for less than the price of a small 21st Century car:

(Jaguar not included). Sorry that's a bit out of focus. Awkward size to scan, but bear with me, it gets better...

Coved ceilings, forsooth. Obviously you will have to live with her some of the time, so you might as well take Wifey to have a look at the affordable housing of yesteryear:

Look Darling, it's got a roof

But what we are really here for is the VELVET SHITEMINE...

scan0007.jpg

This was a great time for cheap, reliable Japanese cars to start to make their mark, though they were not yet manufactured in Europe (or even Newcastle for that matter). The Starlet got a whole review unto itself:

Scandis available too, though just a few years earlier every single car on the roads throughout the land would have been British down to the last bolt:

I suspect this may be the real reason that particular magazine has been kept:

Like the Wimpey homes, no ballroom. Glorious times; however, we are not here for football. We are here for...

Coming up: More tinny shite and Cor, so simple even a bird can do it Lads!  ;-)

I remember my father getting the loan of one of those Mitsubishis in 1979 with a view to buying one, when all-weekend test drives were unknown. My Grandfather put the kibosh on it when he said "It's foreign, and it will fall to bits with rust".

We ended up with a bloody Chevette...

The West Bridgford oxfam book shop is a fave of mine, especially the transport section. Had some gems from there.

Ahhh.

West Bridgford.

20 years since I lived there.

Disappears off along memory lane :)

The Mews looks like a fupping Lego set but I'd happily live in the other two, complete with lava-coloure glassware in the window sills, frosted glass on the downstairs internal doors and avocado ensuite with a wee brown bathroom downstairs. My wife does not agree!

Think  I may have been house bashing on some of those housing sites during those heady rose tinted days !! Not happy you posting pic of Forest team though, Rams for me !! :-D  :-D

Well, whatever your opinion of the Shite of yesteryear, leafy West Bridgford or indeed Brian Clough, let's see what women were expected to be like in the Topic:

scan0011.jpg

'Mount' and 'Ride-on' may be a bit inappropriate in that particular ad. Never mind, there's a whole Woman's World to entertain our good little lady folk friends:

scan0012.jpg

Fascinating stuff.

scan0013.jpg

Close-up so we can all appreciate that in fashion perspex sun-visor peak. She looks good on the beach, but certainly knows how to sweep carpet tiles too. Mind you, that Ewbank carpet sweeper was never as successful as the Foreman grill thing was it?

Women's World of Disco-danglers and griddled Fish.

scan0015.jpg

Women didn't have plastic surgery in those days. Just lots & lots of makeup.

And on the home entertainment front:

scan0016.jpg

You had to get your mate round to help you lift it into its place in the lounge. (Someone will still have one of these, guaranteed.)

scan0017.jpg

Booze & Topic & Horses, nice mixture.

scan0019.jpg

Several pages of digital watches, but let's get back on track with the likes of:

scan0020.jpg

I think they favoured Ford and Ford favoured them, no Chryslers or Vauxhalls in the picture. Nice!

Loving that Barratt ad....Of course a ten grand studio flat is exactly where you would expect to park your Volante.   Or is he saying if you keep buying the houses he can have another one?

Still seem to quite often find Hanger White vans blocking my view for miles... Or am I dreaming?

Anyway...

scan0023.jpg

The words 'stringent standards' and 'Leyland' do not go well together, but still.

scan0024.jpg

Bit of a Mediterranean theme here with...

scan0025.jpg

...Italian ceramic wall & floor tiles (and her), and...

scan0026.jpg

...Stradas!

But by now you are hungry and will be wanting to get something to eat in 1979:

scan0021.jpg

Or you may prefer to dine out with this stylish group of late '70s charmers:

scan0028.jpg

So I gev her a slap on the bum and said 'Milk and two sugars for me Luv. And when you've brought me brew, get on with that filing will you?' Then I axed her to marry me, and that's ow we first met.'
