Montego brake master cylinder

I've been chatting to some lad in the S of France who's got a Montego Si for sale.

An SI is a pretty rare one anywhere, but especially so in France. I thought that it would probably be unrusty and to be fair the bodywork does look quite tidy although from the photos he's sent, botf sills look a bit deformed beneath the drivers door. The interior looks terrible

To be fair the interiors in these are pretty shite at the best of times but 28 Pyrenean summers are probably a lot more than they were ever likely to survive.

Anyway the main fault with it is the brake master cylinder. The lad has removed it and wants to fit some new seals in it but can't get it to pieces, he reckons theres no circlip retaining the piston inside the bore and he can't see how to get it to bits. Has anyone been inside a Montego/Maestro master cylinder before? Any tips?

I dont feel massively likely to buy this Monty as it seems a bit rough but who knows, I might as well try and help the lad and see where it leads. Would be a good adventure to fetch it, its not far from the Spanish border!!! Anyone who has some decent advice will be rewarded with a load more pictures ofg what is probably the only Monty 2.0 Si remaining in France (thats what the seller reckons anyway)

I don't mean to go all Edd China and just replace shit for the sake of it but it can't be difficult to get a new cylinder on Ebay can it if he is stuck? I work it out by my hourly wage and the time it would take to repair it as to whether I should bother mostly, unless I know its going to be pretty easy.*

*which it never is TBH

i dunno about monstro master cylinders, but have had some experience with rover 820 ones?

the cooooop we had a couple of years ago needed a master cylinder, when sat with the brakes on the pedal would go so far, and then sink further to the floor. the seals in the master cylinder where well and truly kippered! i got a seal kit, but couldn't get the cylinder to bits. it was held together with this daft little grub screw in the side of the cylinder, that was rusted up and when i tried to take it out, the grub screw fell to bits....

we ended up getting a new one, not cheap but luckily it was still available. what is the score on a monstro one, can you still buy one?

I'm sure you can get a cylinder if you're patient. Perhaps he has a set of seals already and wants to fit them? I dont know. My question is just 'does anyone know how to dismantle a Monty master cylinder'. Sounds like you might be onto something with this grub screw.

I'd get in contact with Captain Slow. He's an ARG Rain Man.

Assume HBOL doesn't help? Or does it go down the usual "You must replace the whole thing" route?

Might be worth seeing if he can get hold of an official ARG workshop manual, these BL/ARG manuals used (stress Used) to be way better than any commonly available W/S manual, more comprehensive with better diagrams so may contain the info he's after.

As above with the grub screw/bolt but should be easily visible if present.

If no grub screw remove res and stick air line down the hole......being careful to catch the bits!
