If it was me I'd go Dacia sandero. unlike all those who say they're shit, I actually HAVE driven one. They're fine, the diesels have loads of grunt, a non grenading engine and has very tall gearing so even at 90 it's just wafting along. fuel  economy is incredible, dirt cheap to insure and free road tax.

we've done numerous long motorway trips in one, there is really nothing detrimental to report. It's a decent car.

The only issue really is people who think because a Dacia is cheap and doesn't have a BMW badge that it ergo must be crap.if you care about the badge then Dacia isn't for you.

Jaguar X type estate? saw an 09 plate one today so within the age limit. If you can put up with knowalls telling you its a Mondeo every 5 minutes they are great value.

In a word; DON'T.

I use my car for work and when it came to the time for a new car I got one, on an '09 plate. I'd always promised myself a Jag, and as they were Mondeo based they seemed like a relatively cheap thing to run.

They are, however, rusty as fook - mine's got a rusty tailgate and two rusty front wings, as well as probably a load of grot underneath and in the sills. I fear investigating this. The boot floor had the merest hint of primer, and the space saver wheel had rusted solidly to it and had to be prised off with a breaker bar.

I'm currently in negotiation with Jaguar about getting all this fixed under warranty, but they're being evasive.

They're also smaller and not as nice to drive as the Mondeo they're based on.

I cannot unrecommend it enough.

That said, all this kind of guarantees it shite status. Should it survive long enough.

Go for it!

Surprised nobody's mentioned the Kia Ce'ed yet...we've had one for two and a half years and while it doesn't set the world on fire it's a thoroughly competent car around town or on the motorway plus the 7 year warranty is not to be sniffed at (more of your allowance will stay in your pocket!) - we didn't even buy ours from a dealer or even had it serviced there but they've fixed anything we've asked them no questions asked from a faulty radio volume control to new boot lock because it was a bit rattly.
