Car insurance: Claiming of hire car policy

Hi

 

Bit of help please:

 

I had to hire a car on Monday and a branch blew off in the wind and hit the hire car,  causing a small dent (50p size) on the front wing,  I took the car directly back to the car company and explained what happened. 

 

Basically I've had to claim off the insurance I brought through the hire company and was wondering if this will effect my normal insurance and no claims discount?

 

Sorry if punctuation isn't great, just got bill for repair of £780................Whisky time :-)

Just leave it up to the insurance......that is what they sold to you it for.

 

Don't be pushed into paying and claiming later. If the hire co argue tell as the selling agent it is their problem if the cover they sold you was in some way wrong. I did this a few years ago

 

I would have thought it best to tell your ins co as well.They would probably never know/check until you had a claim but could then use non disclosure as a way to wriggle out

Just to clarify - a branch damaged the hire car and its that you have to pay for? Yes? I'm assuming it was a normal hire car from a major daily rental company and you were paying for it yourself - ie not through an employer or on a credit hire?

 

Right, if so then assuming you are on their insurance then you will be liable for any amount upto the excess. If their costs - which would probably be repair and potentially loss of use - are less than the £780 then they could only charge you that.

 

If your excess - it will be stated on the rental agreement how much - is less than the £780 then thats all they can charge. So if it shows an excess of £250 on the rental agreement then that is your maximum liability.

 

As far as your insurance is concerned - you should tell your insurers as you have made a claim albeit not on your own policy. It won't affect your NCB though as you haven't claimed on your own policy.
