Rebuilda Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I have had to replace a defective alternator on the kit car. The old one was 3 wire (the two big terminals are common output and the small one for the warning lamp. The recon replacement has 5 bloody terminals, two large ones marked + and - , one marked B+, one marked IND and one that looks to be marked as 12V but its worn so isn't clear.I found loads of stuff on the internet on how to fit a 3 wire to a five wire car but nothing that tells me how to wire up the 5 wire.I'm being stupid and trying to get it running so I can go to work tomorrow rather than take it all off again, take it back and change it and have a day off work. Any help greatly appreciated even if it's to tell me it ain't gonna work... Its a lucas 16ACR if thats any help.
Station Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 B to + on battery, IND to lamp on dashboard.I think + goes to big wire on starter and - to ground. I think you should get another one that wires directly to your loom.
jonny69 Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 You don't need to connect all the wires. The only ones needed to make it charge are the big fat one to the battery and the small one to the dashboard lamp. So just use one of the big spade terminals as your charging one and the small spade as the dash lamp, then ignore the rest.
Station Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 Yes, but If you don't have a connection to the dashboard bulb, it won't charge.
Rebuilda Posted July 4, 2013 Author Posted July 4, 2013 I phoned the auto electrician this morning as it was he who supplied the thing. He said the same as Johnny69 which I duly went out and tried. This resulted in the warning lamp being constantly lit and just flickering slightly when the engine was running. 'Fetch it back and we'll change it' he said so I took a chance and drove it over to him.The alternator was from an MGB circa 1969 ish and evidently he didn't even know he had one when he sold it to me. 30 minutes later I had a nice 3 wire alternator fitted and working correctly. He's rebuilding the old one too, That'll do nicely as a spare as lets face it, I drive two Duttons and you can never have too many spares...Thanks for all the answers Guys.
