Bang!

I was driving up the M1 in my diesel Transit yesterday and suddenly I heard a loud bang from underneath the van... I thought it was some debris or a tyre or something, I quickly pulled over to the hard shoulder... Turns out the exhaust box had just exploded Does anybody know why this may have happened?

The stuffing must have fallen out of one of the silencers and blocked the pipe. It might have been the one that burst or it might have been one further down.

I'm sure somebody told me a while back that a build up of something might cause it, due to the engine not running properly... Can't remember what though...

I had a backfire that did this to my P6 exhaust a few years ago...

 

 

This then redirected all the heat upwards and quickly set the back seat stuffing smouldering. All good fun.

 

So I made sure it didn't happen again!

My Granada blew it's nearside middle silencer wide open when I started it one day. Scared the crap out of me as it was still in the garage so it sounded far worse than it was I guess.
