ok one of the vans to test at a new (recommended) MOT station. Failed. OK off to get failures fixed. Re test next day. Passed. Off to PO for tax. Oh the MOTs not on the system (stupidly l left the cert with the van). As l had in the past literally driven round the corner to the PO before and had the pass dhow up l called VOSA to make sure it had gone through. They said nothing against the reg for 2 years (about right before today). Only then did I check the cert. One number wrong. Hear that? Thats the sound of a can of worms being opened........

So back to the test place. They showed me the booking in with the correct reg (taken off the van) and called the DVLA. Doovla are adamant its the testers mistake. After cheching online it turns out there ANOTHER blue Mk2 out there with the reg on my cert. Somehow the crosseyed git at the DVLA has entered the other ones details and ours has no MOT (apparently).

Now tje garage has to fax off the V5 (yes FAX) and the DVLA are muttering about a VIC check!!! As you can imagine I am somewhat psssed off by now.

After many calls and much pacing the DVLA are telling the garage to do a duplicate. WTF?? Wont that be the same? As I watched the same number came up on the screen but what came out of the printer was correct!!

SO how did that happen? And what are the odds?

I have literally NO idea what happened there!

For starters, the tester needs to input both the registration number AND the VIN to log in a test, if they don't match the computer warns you (*in big letters!) that the system can't find the vehicle and you probably fcuked up the numbers. This is normally a good time to go recheck the vehicle.

You can force it to accept the incorrect details and do a test anyway, but you really shouldn't (and it isn't just a case of clicking a box.. not the kind of thing you can do by accident),this would create a MoT for the other van's reg with your chassis number. It sounds like this is what you got, and the rest of the palaver was them trying to sort it out. I guess someone at the helpline edited the record to show the correct registration before the reprint.

One last point, checking the front and rear plates against the test documents is part of the test!

both the reg and chassis numbers are 1 didgit apart. Other than that 2 identical vans I saw them request the duplicate saw the wrong reg come up on the screen and have the right reg on the MOT cert. Go figure.

So the tester got them both wrong, and it matched another existing vehicle? Yeah, that is a 1 in a million chance. Try putting the lotto on tomorrow!

he said the same thing about not being able to proceed. Dunno how it happened either, but as I saw what happened with the 'duplicate' cert I believe the tester.

Wouldn't surprise if the DOOVLA got it wrong.

I had a Suzuki TS125 (muckerbike) classed as ------ a TWO wheel five door saloon

My Mk 1 Golf GTi, (years ago) had one chassis digit wrong on the logbook, the spec, trim, model part. The pedant who wanted to buy it correctly pointed it out as being a lesser model as per the numbers.....

I knew this was incorrect as bought it from the 1st owner who as a Major bought it in Germany as a Uk spec car under some Forces Overseas do.

Letter to VW to verify that the number on the car was correct and the log book wrong finally made DVLA relent and issue a corrected log book.

Didn't refund my fees paid to VW mind...........

amazingly our van's 'twin' is news to me. In 20 years I had no idea. Like l said what are the odds? Ours left Ford in yellow and now 3 reprays later is blue. So is the other one!!

DVLA are very good at cocking things up,and then making life extreamly difficult in getting their cock ups sorted out

I had a run in with dvla a few weeks back. Said I'd not sent two log books for motorbikes I sold. I said I did they said I had to prove I did. now I argued the case that I don't have no obligation to wait for acknowledgement letter and that mail is deemed as served when I post it. Dvla having non of it an threatened court. Me being me I accepted and went to Derby magistrates. I was greeted by a dvla "representitive" who was there to out dvla case forward. They had no case at all! She said sign this and all charges will drop. I did and judge wasn't impressed with her. Neither was I. Lost earnings, parking and 20 mile round trip for nothing.

can you make a claim for loss of earnings in that case?

Posted

Aparently not. Jus be my luck being held in contempt with mood judge was in. Dvla like to think they no what they doing but soon back down when they realise we mo that the onus is on them to prove we didn't send papers not us to prove we did

Seems to be a bit of a sideline of theirs that trick. if you do a search for 'DVLA Wankers', tossers, twats etc, theres plenty of such stories out there.
