Seems a bit hash, especially as his front garden actually looks fairly normal... Possibly his big mistake was not to contest the initial complaint?

Given that he was convicted does anyone know what the legal offence was?

The article makes reference to him being required to remove cars, tools and stuff for vehicle repair. Is possesion of these items illegal then? Or what circumstances made them so?

Probably statutory nuisance. The article doesn't make any reference to the case, so anyone's guess is as good as mine, but if he was being a nuisance to neighbours he could be prosecuted under statutory nuisance which, I believe, is tort law. There's no standard definition of nuisance in most cases, so if it was that, it would probably be down to the judge.

Sorry for re post.

There would be no prosecution for the tort of nuisance, that being a civil matter. He might have ignored an ASBO, or the prosecution might be based on environmental laws about rubbish. It's not so much the cars, perhaps, as the assorted other tat.

...was advised to sell his cars to pay the thousands of pounds accumulated in fines.

Good luck with that...

Doesn't look too bad on Google earth. Not much of a builder looking at his house. Funny thing is, the other houses are all tidy and neat.

Does seem a bit harsh. Especially as council workers (or contractors)are the least tidiest of people on the planet.
