Can you HPI an 'exported' VIN number?

Over on my forum at www.mk1mk2transit.co.uk one of the members has spotted a Mk1 transit that was exported as a 10 year old and is now back in the UK. As it's on Maltese plates, is it possible to HPI the VIN and see if it's tax exempt? The seller's saying it's late 60s but the pedals and other bits say not

I've been able to do it before. It might have been wiped off the records though

The last two letters in the 17 digit VIN give you the year and month, but pre VIN numbers are different. (Came in at the end of the 70s)

From the pics in the listing I estimate it to be no older than 1970 but it could be as new as 74 so not tax exempt. Still waiting for the VIN number. What are you betting my mate won't get it?

Slip me the VIN and I'll HPi the van on Monday. We'll soon find out.
