Euro-glam-shite road trip

Strictly speaking, customs limits apply when you enter or exit Switzerland going from or to an EU member state, but, in my experience, the border plods rarely stop cars at the frontiers. Having said that, I have never been carting booze when I have crossed the border. I only ever had hassle at the Franco-Italian border on the Little St Bernard pass when I was travelling with my hippy bro and a boot full of climbing gear. The Douanier was after a pourboire, I think, which surprised me,as France is in most respects a civilised place, but, hey, the Savoyards have their own special ways.

I don't know the Colmar region, so can't help with restaurants etc, soz.

I leave the house here in Umbria on the 18th, and will travel back via a night in Chamonix visiting my old Mountain Guide pal, and a night in Vichy visiting some aristo French dudes whom we know, before aiming for the 1820 chunnel crossing on the 20th.

I am going today to try to get new tyres for the Excel, as the heat and UV have finished the old ones off (and the 1400 miles of crazed nutter driving since 25th July).

The car is currently sharing the parking space at Casa Anna with a somewhat shitey but very cool 105 Alfa Spider boat tail, rented by a visiting friend. I will try to stick a photo up later.

hotels are booked

here is the plan

Saturday morning leave Vasto, Italy.

Premiere Classe hotel booked for Saturday night in Mulhouse.

Premiere Classe hotel booked for Sunday night in Nancy south.

Eurotunnel booked for Monday evening.

From Mulhouse to Nancy is not far at all and includes possibilities of the historic town of Colmar and/or the Vosges mountains (google for Col du Ballon d'Alsace), or even Frances biggest car museum in Mulhouse I guess near the Peugeot factory. Probably there is a Peugeot museum as well?

I think that the Sunday would be hellish driving in Italy so hopefully leaving Saturday avoids that. Nancy to Calais should be easy on a Monday.

The Swiss rules turn out to be quite lax. I get five personal allowances anyway (the children get one) and also I can export from EU and then reimport into EU as much as I like. In the worst case I may have to pay customs on entry and then be reimbursed on exit but apparently it's unlikely.

I just need nice weather on Sunday.
