Q. for the Rover experts.

Had a bit of a random problem with my Rover lately ('92 216 Gsi, 91,000 miles, Honda lump). If I park up for say 10-15 minutes, when I come back to the car it will start straight away, but run rough, like it's only running on 3. Then it will stall, and won't start again unless I wait maybe a minute, when it will fire up fine and run perfectly. Doesn't happen every time, perhaps once every couple of weeks.

Any ideas?

First stop is to try changing the HT leads or coil pack with known good uns

Coil pack maybe. Changing the HT leads would be pointless for fault finding as HT leads don't tend to cause these symptoms. They tend to work or not work. I've never known a HT lead to break down when hot but work when cold.

As it's a Honda lump, there should be a little led on the front of the engine ECU (which on the 'orrible 827 is under the drivers seat) which will quite probably be flashing a fault code to give you a clue as to what is wrong with it.

Coil pack, ballast resistor (if it has one) or ignition amplifier would be my guess.
