dieselnutjob Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 The kickdown on the 604 doesn't work and I don't have a manual that tells me how to adjust it. It's the only Peugeot that uses the GM 180 transmission, though I think it was used on Rover SD1 as well (2300/2600). So I figured I'll have a go at adjusting it by trial and error. So if it's too loose it won't kickdown when it should. What if it's too tight? Would it act as throttle stop preventing me from getting full power? or will it just kick down too easily?
Pete-M Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 If it's the ZF in yours it should have a little ball on the kickdown cable near the throttle linkage. Get someone to put their foot to the floor on the accellerator pedal and adjust the kickdown cable so there's a tiny little bit of slack in it at full throttle. That normally gets it just about right. If gearchange points are all early, then the cable is too tight. If they're too late and you've not got kickdown, then it's too loose.
ashmicro Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Top man, Pete. I think you have just solved a problem I was asked about during the week!
dieselnutjob Posted November 27, 2011 Author Posted November 27, 2011 Mine has the GM gearboxI think all 604s do
dieselnutjob Posted November 27, 2011 Author Posted November 27, 2011 well at least petrol ones anyway
Pete-M Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 The standard GM box adjustment procedure is to have the car idling, operate the throttle linkage (away from the kickdown cable) until the revs just begin to rise. Hold the throttle in this position and measure the gap between the crimped stop on the kickdown cable and the end of the adjuster. It should be between 0.25 and 0.50 mm.
dieselnutjob Posted November 27, 2011 Author Posted November 27, 2011 what if it's about an inch ?I adjusted the cable so that it's got a bit tension in it when the throttle is flat to the floor, but at idle there is a couple of centimetres of slack cable at the carb end is the cable supposed to get pulled back when the tension is released? maybe the inner cable is stuck to the outer or some return spring is broken?
