    ... they're properly, properly humped; SV543 (P543 TYS - I don't do phonenumbers for fleetnumbers) did manage all day on the 38 on Tuesday which isn't bad going these days. I seem to recall it's gone full circle at least once as it was a branded 5 at Larkfield some time ago...

     

    Anyway, back on topic - we've only recently just bought another two slightly older Alexander PS-bodied Mk3 B10Ms (bringing our total to six) and the boss simply can't get enough of them. Good on fuel, automatic you can squeeze loads of seats in them and they're more or less indestrucable - two of ours were roof deep in water in the Carlisle floods a few years back. Ours see most of their hard work during the winter months, though one ended up in Oban during the summer...

    Properly humped - a bit like all First Group vehicles, then! :lol: DJ International buses look really tidy, and suit their livery well.

     

    Sadly the last Ailsa plied the streets of Glasgow in 2006 and the Citybuses are long gone.

     

    Long gone, making me feel old now! I was never on an Ailsa, but remember them and the CityBuses well...

  3. Shame, surprised they've been kept in service for so long though, being high floor.

     

    Must be the last ex KCB Network buses left now.

     

    One has been preserved though, soon to be repainted back into KCB colours.

     

    Still a few ex Sheffield ones around my neck of the woods.

     

    That's correct - N94 OGG has entered preservation, soon to be repainted into Kelvin Central livery. I would like to see them preserving at least one of the P---TYS registered buses.

     

    Larbert depot also has some of these Alexander PS buses left, but as with Glasgow, probably not for long...

  4. Put simply, yes. The wages aren't great, the shifts tend to be shite and 90% of the buses with the big operators are humped.

     

    The buses which I tend to travel on are modern Volvo Plaxton Panthers, from 54 reg to 09 reg, and even the newest ones make all manner of weird and wonderful noises which don't sound healthy. When paying for my fare, I notice that there are all manners of warning messages on the dashboard, from ECU to retarder faults. Probably not surprising given the manner in which they are driven...

     

    ...I do feel sympathy for some of the passengers which drivers have to put up with, though.

    It would be great to get a VP version. You never know, may be worth a wee bit extra if you keep it nice...

     

    ...I would buy as nice and as rust-free an example as possible, get a bit of Waxoyl underneath, and keep an interesting old car on the road!

  6. The 340 had a 1.4 version too, thats got to be a candidate for this thread! must be gutless, especially one with the rubber band gears! I dont think ive ever driven a 1.4 one.

     

    I've had two 1.4 340s with the manual and vario boxes, and I've found that that engine copes with the weight of the car pretty well. Definately not what you'd call fast, but surprisingly nippy from standstill. They're pretty well bombproof engines if looked after as well, there was this mentalist on V3M who had a 300k+ miler. AFAIK it still hasn't been scrapped, it's in storage. This all despite the fact he pretty well abused the old thing, he once drove it down a pothole-ridden dirt road at 50mph apparently.

     

    Bloody good cars IMO.

     

    Love the 300 series. By the way, with the 1.4 carburettor-powered 340 having 72BHP, this figure isn't far off a modern, twin-cam 1.4 Golf at 75BHP. Where's the progress in power?

    Ryan, actually. I found it to be quite funny when I 'advised' him to floor the throttle when turning a corner in the snow. The next time I saw him, he remarked: "I see what you mean"...He had no idea that a RWD BMW would react in that way in the snow! :lol:

    The old Volvo run-out models were known as Celebration models (940, 480 etc.) The last 480 Celebration was for sale recently: http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C263084

     

    Others, such as the 240; 340; 440 etc were known as 'Limited Edition' or simply as 'LE'. Later V70s and S40/V40 run-out editions were known as 'Classic'.

     

    Newer Volvo run outs are, as far as I know, not designated. Apparently, Ford didn't care...

  9. I have given up on TG - I just watch the older, proper episodes with Quentin Willson and the like. When I used to be interested in the new TG, my dad would always say: "What are you watching that programme with them three wankers for?" So I must forward this question onto all other proper petrolheads - True car lovers wouldn't destroy cars. They are TV presenters, by shocking and annoying people, they create ratings and thus increase viewings to their idiotic nonsense.

  10. I agree on the comments re learning - most kids actually no longer see learning to drive as a necessary skill - I'm sure in big cities it is great and easy to get by without a driving licence, but they don't even get out on a scooter at age 16 anymore.

     

    It will create huge problems, and the longer one leaves it, the harder it is to pick up the skills necessary.

     

    The first car I drove after passing my test, and the one I took on the motorway for the first time was my dad's Jaguar XJ6 S1 3.6, I was forever getting stopped when driving it and asked 'is this your car, sir'.

     

    Yes, I knew of people like this who were just not interested in learning to drive. Then again, they weren't generally interested in learning anything when at school either...

     

    I, on the other hand, was in a car as soon as I turned 17. As to the XJ6, I have a friend who regularly drives his father's BMW 525d E65, and I thought driving my father's Volvo V40 was big! I also know of someone who was handed the keys to their parents' (brand new) Audi A4 Avant when they passed their test a couple of years back...Brand new Audi with scuffed alloys?!

  11. Hi, I have a couple of thoughts on this, and should be of help as I am 19 and remember the time leading up to getting my first car at 16! I myself have a 2001 1.0 VW Polo, which in my opinion is an excellent car, but as you are looking for an '85-'95 motor... For this you would get into a '6N' model Polo, which would be a great car. I would also recommend a car which I would have loved and would provide much RWD tomfoolery - a Volvo 340. The base 1.4 would be cheap enough insurance-wise. Alternatively, what about a MkII VW Golf 1.3, or a MkIII Ford Escort 1.3? More interesting than the more modern Ka with which it shares an engine.

     

    I think that whatever you get you will enjoy, just remember that cars such as the Citroen 2CV may well be interesting, you will have to live with the car until your ridiculous insurance rates reduce, and as such a 2CV or the like would be fairly scary on a motorway etc! Anyway, whatever you get, drive it and enjoy it! :D
