Alternator - FIXED about flippin Time the Yugo LIVES

Ta, I will file them for later use.

I decided to have one last crack at this this afternoon before sending it off to a sparks...

the reason being that the huge ampage of the current that poured into the alternator frying a 30 amp cable made me suspect that the short MUST be a visible and straightforward issue - no worn sator here.

Anyway, took it to bits and sure enough the culprit was the bosch style brushes..the bosch system integrates the brushes into the voltage regulator so that you hange the whole unit rather than just the brushes and....in theory at least...you can change the unit with the alternator in situ. However - fitting the voltage regulator on this alternator requires a great deal of care to make sure that the extended brushes fit against the slip rings as they are supposed to do and not - which is what had haqppened - ended up with the leading brush catching on the edge of the wrong slip ring, sitting at an angle and opening a ciruit short the size of the Thames at Chatham

So - bodging a strip of perspex to hold the brushes in retracted position I was able to manipulate the VR into position, release the brushes by withdrawing the perspex..

to ensure there would be no connection issues I created a new mini charging loom out of new 27amp halfords best, new 30amp spade connectors and soldered all the joints with my pigs arse standard of soldering.

anyway, fitted the alternator - wired it up, hooked up the battery and ...

no smoke, sparks, swearing!

AT LAST!

It needed a bit of belt slip spray squirted into the carb as it is pointing slightly up hill and if you leave the Yugo in such a position for a few weeks without using it it tends to struggle slurping the gas initially.

Eventually the car roared into life on full choke and settled onto it's 1/3rd choke idle ticking over nicely..ran inside to get the multimeter and....

14.57 Volts across the terminals

14.57 volts at the back of the alternator

and

14,57 Volts at the starter motor...

FANFECKINDABBIEFICKINDOZIE!!

About bloody time..

thanks for all your help and patience everyone,,,the good news is that after all this I am now a hell of a lot more familiar with charging and carb fueling problems than I was before.
