Changing foreign plates

We have a 12 year old Ford Focus that is on Spanish plates.  We want to change them to UK plates but we need to get chassis insurance first which has been quoted at about £1000 but I am not sure if we  can just get temporary chassis insurance.   I want to know if given the value of the car if it is worth changing them as I think it takes time and there might be other expenses.  Does anyone have any experience of this?

To import from Europe you need to do a NOVA declaration within 2 weeks of it entering the uk. Once you have done that you will need an import pack from the dvla this will tell you what documents you need. The car will need to be mot'ed. I don't think the insurance is needed anymore but should be the same sort of cost on the chassis number as it would be if uk registered. It costs £55 for the first registration fee plus the cost of the road tax. It probably isn't worth all the hassle to be honest on a 12 year old focus unless you know the car well and it is a good one.
