childhood memories

Dad had a black mk4 escort that his grandad bought new, always thought it was strange that it sounded like a sewing machine, loved that car, he then traded it in for a Fiat Tipo and I was genuinely upset about it.

Does anyone remember when they were a kid going on a long journey and pulling over to let engine 'cool down'

I do. It was a Mk2 Cavalier, I was three and it was on the Rhuallt hill on the A55.

That Cavalier was rancid and the interior made me trip balls if I'd had any Lucozade (was not often allowed Lucozade).

I passed a few onto him that he got very attached to, lavishing unheard of amounts of money on them to keep them going. (sd1 2600, audi 100 2.2)

Dads are great for that, aren't they?

I remember my old man had a mk3 16v 1800 sport Vauxhall Astra estate that he just wouldn't give up on. Had it from new and it was killed when Tesco had all the dodgy fuel many many years back. I'm not sure if it was down to us being pretty skint at the time or him just being pretty stubborn, but that limped on for about 3 years when it really was beyond saving mechanically. Easy start in the morning, engine flush most weekends, air-locks left right and centre, passing it's emissions test by getting the diagnostics shoved into another car, it did well.

What a great car that actually was. M338 PAB, we hardly knew ye.
