My parents had a 1.3 estate for quite a few years. I would also drive it on visits back home. With 89bhp, it wasn't underpowered as such, and it would have no problem cruising even at 100mph (my dad always tends to drive a bit too fast), but it was suffering badly in the gearing/torque department. You had to rev the nuts off the engine to make any progress, even for negotiating city traffic, which meant that oilchanges were almost redundant by 100k- the oil needed topping up so often that it had no time to get dirty!

 

The 1.6 is so much better and, of course, well worth the extra road tax! GLWTS and all that.
