Vin's Screen Grabs (Update 30/12/16) - Akenfield (Suffolk, 1974)

Trigger’s Sweeney screengrab thread from a few weeks inspired me to do the same with the ‘Chinese Detective’.

There were two series of the Chinese Detective, broadcast in 1981 & 1982 respectively. It’s set in the, then very run down, Docklands areas of East London. Much of the shooting was done outside and on the street so the backgrounds are ram packed with old shite.

I have done screen grabs for both series. I will post them in chronological order. I have done screengrabs that I think will be of interest. I will post them all, and there are a lot!!!! The series really is packed with old rammel.

I’ll also include some shots that aren’t car related but they are interesting none the less.

Series 1 Ep 1

Various Hunters are used by Det. John Ho throughout series 1 and a bit of 2. He's in a Cortina after that.

Funnily enough, I ordered the DVD of the series yesterday afternoon :)

That Hunter was used in another series but I can't remember what the hell it was called.

Blimey, i haven’t seen that for years. Is it actually a good TV programme or is the joy in it mainly shite-related?

Some more.

Mr Boll - It is actually IMO, a good series. Some of the acting is a bit wooden but it doesn't detract. It was written by Ian Kennedy-Martin who also created/wrote the Sweeney. Harry South, who did the Sweeney music also does the music in this too.

Series 1 Ep 4.

This episode centres round a 'nearly new' car dealer so there are a lot of screengrabs :)

Unlikely, but the fact that my old bed was bought from the Chinese Detective's brother when he ran a bed shop in St. John's Precinct shows that anything is possible...

Typical! Stupid woman steps out in front of a fine sporting saloon and everyone else moans on about "bloody BMW drivers". Luckily a good car like that wouldn't be damaged.

Great pictures by the way. Never heard of the series; will look out for it on ITV5 some time.

There seems to be the same blue Hunter in almost every episode! But on different plates. R, S and T plated. T plate definately isn't right as they would have had the twin headlight front end by that stage.

Awesome pics. I do remember watching the series as a kid. I'm guessing it was transmitted around 1981?

EDIT: Doh! You said 1981 at the beginning.

I'm taking that with a strong connection to The Sweeney, it will have had the same producers too, so no doubt the deal with Ford for product placement. The blue and red MK III Escorts parked next to eachother had featured in the previous episode passing in the street. It's not really that subtle re-use of action vehicles, as they look so clean/modern compared to the other cars in scenes!

Also, is that foreign shed/van from page 1 not a Leyland EA, favoured by Royal Mail? Speaking of which:

vlcsnap-2011-10-09-20h38m48s232.png

Is this where Royal Mail got their inspiration for the new logos on their vans and lorries a few years later?

These are brilliant Vin, I'm glad I've influenced you into doing this! As you can guess I love seeing stuff like this.

So, Can anyone tell what the red car here is? Japanese, Colt? Datsun?

Is that Arfur Fowler?

If it is, Bill Treacher (the actor concerned) didn't get credited, at least not according to IMDB. However it does mention Peter Dean, who later played Pete Beale, Arfur's brother-in-law!

And that red car is definitely a Mustang, specifically a Mustang 2 (1974-78). I nearly had one many years ago, in acid yellow with the 2.8 V6.
