And did you ever end up owning one?

Mine was this...

Ever since I can remember I've always wanted a Stratos Silver 3000S

I never actually owned a silver example but a black 3 litre found its way onto my driveway in about 1990. Bought from the local banger auction. Sadly it never quite lived up to the dream because it was the only V6 Capri I've ever come across that didn't have power steering.

Since I was a kid I wanted a Renault 14, mainly because my Dad had one. I've never owned one or ever even been in one since I was about 3 years old.

However, I would say the first real car I wanted to own (At an older, more worldly-aware age) was the mk1 Rover Sterling, and yes, I have owned a few of them so far, including the rarer pre-1988 Rover 825 Sterling.

Datsun 180B SSS , Pops had a standard 180B but I always wanted the SSS

Havnt got one as yet

I had one and it was a total nightmare to sell because of the dog leg gearchange. I ended up swapping it for a Marina 1.8TC that tried to kill me at least twice a day.

Triumph Herald. We had them as kids - the garden/driveway had 5 scrappers (1960 convertible, 1961,2 or 3 Saloon, 1965 convertible with a shattered front end  , 1965 12/50 saloon, and a 1969 13/60 saloon) and one runner (1970 saloon) at one time - and that was the first car I drove at age 8 or 9, up and down the drive with Dad beside me. I wanted one as my first car when I was saving to buy at 18, but it didn't happen - I bought a Metro instead. The closest I've got since was asking to be fall-back on Tonedepear's one if it didn't go elsewhere!

1981, saw a brand new W126 Mercedes S-Class outside the paper shop near Sunningdale railway station. Fast forward to 2002. H96XWR, a 300SE came into my life. Silver, Blue leather, Walnut, electric roof, electric column adjust, cruise, twin channel air con, sports mode Auto box, etc, etc, etc, I kept it 6 months, made a huge profit, and bought a 1994 Diesel Fiesta. Taught the Wife to drive. Done. Wish I still had it, and also, that I had never seen it.

I always wanted a Mk1 Cortina, everything about them is just right, I used too have dreams about the CND rear lights, I'm still yet to own one though.

By the 90's i was craving for a Peugeot 306, I found my self getting gooy eyed over them and when the facelift came out in 1997 i had to get one, It took until 2006 until i bought one though, It wasn't as nice as i expected though, the door nearly fell off!

E-Type. Still dreaming... After that, a Mk3 Zephyr, as my dad had one which I loved; I've never driven one but it's still an achievable ambition. Concurrent with that, a police car! As explained elsewhere, Z-Cars was a formative influence... I managed in later years to have one British and one American, so I'm pretty pleased with that score. Also, pretty much from the moment I heard the name, a Cadillac. Again, had two, so that's good enough. I still have some abiding wants... Aston Martin V8 Volante (that'll never happen!); Mini pickup (entirely possible). Having owned or driven a variety of cars in 33 years, I can say now that type is more important than brand. So my preferred type is: fairly big 4-door saloon or estate, RWD, 6-cylinder engine of 2.5 litres or more, automatic, and as old as possible. You'd think I'd have got on better with my 1987 BMW 525e, wouldn't you? It fitted the spec but never fitted me. I had it 4 weeks and will never have another. On the other hand my 1987 Volvo 740 GLE estate was bloody marvellous! I had it over three years and would have another tomorrow, despite falling short of the engine spec.

[troll mode] Your choices are all too mainstream and not shite enough. [/troll mode]

The first car I REALLY wanted was *drum roll* the Renault 25 Baccara. I remember drooling over it by looking at a test in some odd French car magazine that somehow ended up in my hands. Of course, I didn't speak French, as I was 7 or 8, I hadn't even done the two years at high-school that now allow me to ask for directions and order a beer.

I am hoping to buy one in a year or so, but it depends on whether I find a job and whether said job offers a combination of location (mostly) and salary (if it's in/around London) that is conducive to owning more than one car.

MArk 2 Cortina 1600E. In Aubergine.

Mydads best mate had one, and used as a daily/rolling resto. On an H plate if I recall.

With an expanding family he sold it in 1984/5 and bought a Mark 3 Escort, on an X plate. I remember badgering the old fella to buy it for my first car ( I was 14 or 15 at the time) but he wouldn't. Git.

He did however buy me a 1980 Renault 4TL when I passed my test in early 1988. Collected Thursday, rolled Sunday.:oops:

The first car related want that I remember was for Father 4drs '86 Mk3 Granada 2.0i Ghia Auto.

I loved that thing, it was so big and comfortable. I seem to remember it being quite quick for what it was too. I even loved the fact that it was Ivory with brown bumpers/interior plastics and beige velour seats. HAWT!

After that it was dads next car that caught my eye. A '94 Cavalier 1.8iLS (L579HVH) in metallic Burgandy . It was the first car we had a CD player in, and even though it had keepfit windows in the back it could be forgiven as it felt to shift like a scalded cat compared to a 2ton Ford with a tired pinto and an autobox.

Infact, Im suprised by myself having never owned an example of either. Perhaps I just don't want to spoil my childhood memories...

Mk2 Escort RS2000.

I'm unlikely ever to scratch that automotive itch, as there always seem to be more important things to spend the £10k+ on a good one goes for these days. And when I was single and childless, I didn't have the ten grand nor a garage. Oh well.

I've no idea at all. There are few cars I HAVEN'T wanted as a child. I actually wrote to Jim'll Fix It and said I wanted to drive a car around Silverstone. Fair enough, but I then went on to say that it must be a Volvo 740 Turbo estate for some reason. I think most eight-year olds would have asked for a Ferrari. Jim's an arsehole by the way. I didn't get a response. That Tony Hart is an ignorant sod as well.

A Talbot Solara.

Pathetic aint it.

April 1981. Practically weeing myself cos my Mum and Dad were going to the Talbot dealer in Chippenham to test drive a brand new, white 1600LS as part of the the 'Summertime Special' promotion they were doing at the time. £3995 on the road. We had a T Plate Marina 1.8 Special in Tara Green to part exchange.

Gutted when they came back saying they didn't like it, saying the gearchange was terrible. They ARE clonky boxes, but you soon get used to it. Also my Mum didn't like the blue interior.

Whilst other lads at school had posters of punk bands or maybe Kim Wilde on their bedroom wall, I had every current Talbot brochure . Carefully blue-tacked and open at my favourite page.

A city gent exiting his office , briefcase in hand, to his awaiting metallic red Solara SX with vinyl roof.

Two young women laughing whilst unloading the boot of a metallic blue Samba GLS.

A Willow Green Horizon GL outside an Antique Shop with well to do middle-aged couple perusing the window display.

Well horny stuff!

Forward to May 1981. Dad bought a new Cortina 1600L. I could have wept.

Didn't get to own one til 2010, then sold it to wuvvum and bought Old Mr ingram one.

I always wanted in C reg Orion diesel. Dad used to borrow one of the company pool cars in the mid eighties and I was always an Orion diesel.

I can always remember the distinctive diesel clatter and that newish Ford smell. I think I liked them so much as they were so much different to the old wrecks we owned.

I bought an Orion diesel on a C plate in 1996 and it still had that smell, but it also seemed slow and very heavy to drive! It did not last long as the engine was well passed it best and I ended up moving it on after a year.

My other loves were the Austin Maxi and the Renault 14 both cars dad owned at the time he was borrowing Orion diesels. I have had one Maxi and am about to own another and I also own a Renault 14 so I suppose I am in shite heaven!

A a big-bumper Volvo 240, largely due to fact that at the age of three I was enthralled by the 'windscreen wipers' on their headlights :)

Although Nameless, The Volvo and TV2 have satisfied my Volvoish needs for the best part of a decade, I still hanker after a late-1970s 244 or 245GL

I remember my Dads Chrysler Sunbeam was in for a repair and we had a shitty orange Marina Coupe as a courtesy car like this but probably considerably wankier.

I was devistated when we had to take it back saying that I did not want our nice new car and wanted to keep the smelly old car. Probably a sign of things to come.
