Disappearing Fast.

What cars are still a common sight on our roads today but are going to be considered a bit of a rarity in three to five years time?

I'm thinking of mk3 Fiestas and R8 Rovers for starters.

What should we be laying down in our shite cellars for the year 2015?

I'm probably a bit late on this, but MK3 golfs. The boggo models are well on their way, and the posh ones (gti, VR6) are being used almost entirely as cheap engine donors for more desireable VAG tat. You see a few on the road now, but give it a year and most of them will be made into topman belt buckles, and the engines will have been hastily installed in mk2 golfs and t25 transporters with emissions and idling issues.

Nice thread. As above, Renault Avantime and Vel Satis. I reckon the Avantime is very close to the end of it's depreciation curve, and then it'll begin to appreciate. Buy one within in the next year if it's on your want list. The Vel Satis on the other hand will just plummet into complete disappearance like the Safrane and 25.

Others -

Citroen XM

Vauxhall Omega

Mk 1 & 2 Mondeos

Mk 1 Renault Laguna

1st generation of the Audi "A" range. Just sold my first shape A6 this evening.

Chrysler Neon.

I would contend that cars like the Vel Satis, Avantime and Magentis don't quite fit into the "common sight on our roads today" category.

I reckon the second-generation Daewoos (Lanos, Nubira and Leganza) are going to disappear all of a sudden in the not-too-distant future - they are already selling for not much more than scrap money, and look set to follow in the footsteps of the Nexia and Espero.

Mk3 Mondeos. There'll be a few 07 platers left, the rest will just disappear overnight.

I think the only mk3 Mondeos left in five years time will be the petrol powered ones.

I think the Skoda Octavia Mk1 will disappear rapidly too. They've all done eleventy billion miles as cabs by the time they're six years old. Then it's not worth replacing the DMF any more as they won't pass another plate in most councils. So they'll spend a few months floating around council estates being driven by pot dealers and end up scrapped when the clutch goes.

The Mk2 Avensis D4D will go the same way, but there'll be little clusters of the things still doing sterling service in Birmingham, Bradford and Derby for a few years yet.

...Mk 1 Renault Laguna...

Mk2 as well, as the myriad electrical issues and chocolate gearboxes began to add up before their fifth birthdays.

Lets not forget the mk.2 Megane, electrical problems will utterly decimate numbers in the not too distant future.

Another thing is tax, with the top band something like £400 now, we are going to see cars fragged when the ticket runs out as it simply won't be worth the cost. How very green.

Fiat Cinquecentos and Seicentos. In fact any Fiat prior to the Mk2 Punto.

Citroen ZXs and non-Picasso Xsaras; the pre-facelift versions of the latter are disappearing fairly quickly.

Any Rover up to the 25/45/75.

<97 Passats.

Audi 80s, 100s and <97 A6s.

I don't think Octavias will completely disappear - like the Pug 405, the diesel estates will continue to be around, but the other models will thin out substantially.

Now that Kias and Hyundais are considered a credible alternative to established brands, will we see the newer models disappear off the radar at a young age? Looking at early 21st century models on eBay (and this goes for Protons too), they've pretty much all had a high number of owners and bugger-all documented maintenance in the way that many Eastern Bloc motors did in the 80s and 90s. Be interesting to see if the Ceed/i30 etc follow the same secondhand ownership demographic.

Escorts have already virtually disapeared in West Wales, not the most affluent area. Mk1 Meganes have already mostly gone.

Daewoos in general (when did they become Chevrolets? 5 years ago now?). Mk2 Lagunas due to the fact that 03-54 plate ones are getting scrapped/broken now and Mk2 Mondeos, since that the youngest is 11 years old.

Mk1 Scenics are still about, but if our one is anything to go on they won't be for much longer. Pretty much everything has lasted to now, but it's all finally failing. Corrosion, exhaust, gearbox, engine wear, battery... it's all going at once and not worth replacing on a car that won't even sell for £100.

I know a guy who has a 3.0 V6 Laguna II. It's the facelift version, and was registered in early 2007, just before the Laguna III arrived. He has to pay £445 a year road tax due to the emissions and being just over the Mar - 06 cut off point. Another 2-3 years and this fine wagon could easily meet it's bitter end due to the extortionate road tax costs meeting classic french depreciation. Ridiculous!

In case anyone was thinking of listing Fiat Ulysse, Pug 806, Cit Synergie, just come to south Norfolk. Very rarely does a day go by where I don't see one - admittedly sometimes I see the same one, but there are blue, green, red and silver Ulysses of varying ages and styles everywhere. Did someone dump a load in Thetford by any chance?

I think the presence of a strong local dealer or specialist sees a cluster of particular models/makes while elsewhere they’d be rare. And vice versa.

Primera P10 certainly getting less common, I was quite surprised to see an H-reg one a day or two ago. Even P11 starting to disappear.

I’m doing my best to ensure Camrys are still a common sight on the roads around South Norfolk...

No great loss though as they are fugly horrible things

Happy to report that early Ford Ka models seem to be disappearing at a good rate too.
