R9UKE
OK so special editions are usually tarted up with free air con and CD Player, right? I can think of quite a few which took it to another level. I'll start with this: What were VW thinking when they made the Polo Harlequin? Anyone ever seen one on the UK market? hennabm
mk1_4dr
Not only have I seen a Polo Harlequin (does anyone else remember them being a prize on 'the big breakfast' way back when..) this turned up to a local show recently. obviously not an offical special editon though. Tonka
I remember one of those Polos in the showroom when I collected our new Seat Ibiza, the salesman was far from impressed at the prospect of trying to shift it on, I always wondered how difficult it would be to work out "whether it's had a bit of paint" years later when it came through the auctions.............. Luxobarges_Are_Us
The Polo Harlequin is a fantastic idea for shiters, as it allows you to raid scrapyards without worrying about the colour of the new panels. Unfortunately, most of the people who buy car loans would probably never think about buying anything off a scrapyard, so I can understand why it wasn't that successful. What does the 'colour' field in registration document say? hennabm
Tonka
Just checked on DVLA the reg'n of one and it says red, guess it would have been the colour of the main body shell.
ashmicro
There was a homebrew Rover 400 HHR Harlequin in Newtownabbey a few years ago. The guy got all the panels from Glengormley Car Dismantlers and Devlins in Randalstown.
R9UKE
Never caught sight of that, sounds like it would have been worth seeing I wasn't sure as to whether or not the Harlequin was ever sold in the UK... obviously there's a few around. Can't imagine it would be too hard to convert any old Polo into one. They look so shit.

R9UKE
The Peugeot Roland Garros models are one of my favourites. They only ever come in a miserable green colour and have mad leather interiors. I always dreamt of a 206 RG for my first car...
Shep Shepherd
The Volvo 244GL Anniversary, known as the Jubileum in some markets: Approximately 500 were made in 1977 to commemorate Volvo's 50th anniversary. About 50 were sold in the UK, so they are very rare nowadays.
Mr Lobster
I've seen TWO Polo Harlequins today. Photo later if I can be arsed. I worked for a VW dealer when they were new, I seem to recall the dealership being forced to take a couple by VW.

Vin
Panda Italia 90 is one of my favourite special editions. I always liked the Panda 'Sergio Tacchini' but I can't find a decent picture of one. The 126 'Brown' definitely qualifies. How about this though for a SOLID GOLD Shite Special Edition. Apparently, in 1979, Fiat Switzerland had a hand in this. A Fiat Ritmo 'Star Trek' edition I have no idea wether it was a proposal, or a one off, or whatever, but WOW! http://aebergon.perso.neuf.fr/Fiat/page ... rek_CH.htm
flat4alfa
Lancia Beta Coupe HIFI Perfect sales effort combining a fleet of unsold Beta waiting in an English field up to their sills in water, a repaint, a wheel recolouring, a spoiler or two, a stripe or two, a 40W Goodmans stereo system and a nationwide publicity campaign stating the 40W proudly. Tickford's best ever work.
AnthonyG
Similar to that, there was a Chrysler/Talbot Alpine 'Stereo', no doubt with the cheapest radio/cassette from Philips range fitted. It was a factory effort.
Manbearpig
The Cavalier Commander reminded me of my own pet hate, Cavalier Calibres with their miserable bodykits and inexplicably proud owners. However whilst looking for pics came across this which is news on me, the Calibre-wannabe Irmscher Wartburg! Some bad timing and lack of enthusiasm means they only made 2 prototypes apparently;
dollywobbler
Arguably the very first factory special edition. 1976 IIRC. I only found out about this one the other day. The BX Buffalo! Luxury - proper, shite luxury.
AnthonyG
Avenger Sunseeker was earlier than 76 - IIRC 1974. Also AMC of the US were doing special editions in the mid 1960s. You could get a 'White Hat Special' (white vinyl roof and other bits) from Dodge in 1969 .
