Turkish Delight - The Otosan Anadol

Sam sold his Anadol, annoyingly not to me as I was broke at the time. I was re-advertised on ebay last year using the same pictures and sold for less than the vendor paid. Presumably it's now sat in somebody else's shed waiting for work to start. I might get lucky third time round and bag it for a fifth of the original asking price or something. Ho hum.

Holy shit, one line listing and even then a steaming pile of bullshit about the window treatment.

It almost looks interesting until you realise what's been done and to what.

This talk of Anadols has reminded me of this cool video I saw recently, which is actually the first footage I've seen of the Reliant Scooter-Ski.

A typically great bit of Reliant publicity, it's packed with the firm's products including an Anadol A1 which could possibly be the bastardised red car currently for sale

Sadly the reg isn't visible. The other Reliants all look great, particularly the three Scimitars

It's interesting that Reliant had a handful of Anadols knocking around as late as 1967/68 and presumably beyond, but I guess they were 'samples' for anyone else looking to take up the 'package' dealof instant motor manufacture they were offering at the time. I suspect the Anadol and the gold and brown Scimitars are the same ones in the great 'Reliant products' photo from 1968 that was used as the cover of the Reliant book (although, perhaps tellingly, no Scooter Ski in this image)

(Thread resurrection) I thought this was converted to RHD once it arrived on the British Isles. So there wasn't a RHD Anadol in existence until this example was "Barry-ed" ?

It isn't the only Anadol that was sent to the UK when it was new, some (low-quality) pictures online show an STC-16 that was imported over to the UK in the 70's, probably something to do with a Turkish diplomat or the UK-based embassy. Perhaps this might be a RHD example? In the first photo, I can kind of see the faint outline of a steering wheel on the right side of the car, and in the second photo what appears to be a steering wheel on the right side. Of course very hard to examine due to the image resolutions, but there might be (or might of been) a RHD Anadol all along.

Still an incredibly sad sight to see SRE 937G's fate today, all because some moron couldn't afford to mess up a 2-door Escort.

Thought this thread might make a useful home for my pics of a lightly modded Anadol A8-16, which I happened upon in Altinkum in 2008.

Not sure whether the different front end was done by the manufacturer or a subsequent owner, but it's a bit different to the rather more original version brought over by @Sam Glover:

With only just over 1,000 examples built, I doubt I'll be seeing many more - unless there's one lurking in an underground garage under the Turkish Embassy in London...?

To comment on my last post, turns out there is such a thing as a RHD Anadol A1. I discovered about an hour or so ago that there were plans to locally assemble them in New Zealand as the Anziel Nova. From what I read, they followed the footsteps of Autocars/Sussita in Israel, and got in touch with Reliant, later contacting Ford as it was going to be Cortina-based. Of course, like a lot of good things, the project didn't catch on but they did create this RHD prototype which is quite interesting.

I've posted the Wheels magazine article from May 1968 on Shite Magazine Scans.

I would have thought that back in 1968 there would have been enough middle aged men around in New Zealand who would baulk at a Turkish product with a name similar to ANZAC.

Why would you Barry that thing up? It just looks awful. I get perhaps putting a better engine in but those wings look fucking shit.
