Excellent! Good luck with it.

My most recent experience with SORN on a newly-purchased car: There's a printable PDF form somewhere on DVLA's site, on that there's an option to say you're declaring SORN on a car that is in the process of being registered to you. I did that, though the previous owner must've been a bit slow as DVLA then wrote back saying I couldn't declare SORN on a car I didn't own. I then sent a copy of that letter plus copy of my original form and an updated one, showing that I'd done the best I could, and it did get through to them the second time. By which time I'd taxed it anyway...

the beast awakes!

I went to Halfords and bought the biggest battery that would fit (same one as my other Pugs that are diesels). Wasn't too bad with my trade card.

Played with the electric windows and sunroof (they all work)

Changed the engine oil and filter and gave it a crank

to my utter amazement it started and idled well.

I didn't run it too long as the transmission is making a slight whine and I think it's low on ATF.

It is excellent news that it starts and runs well.

Good news! I look forward to seeing how much easier your one is to fix than mine seems to be :-)

Is yours proving difficult to fix?

It's only running on five cylinders. I had a spare rotor arm and dizzy cap but that didn't help. I'll try a set of leads and plugs next. Also the transmission took 1 1/2 litres of ATF to even get the oil to the bottom of the dipstick. I think it'll need more. Hope it's not stuffed.

Also the lacquer is bubbling all over the roof and bootlid, so basically it will need a total respray eventually

Oooh nice interior, those seats look to be very comfy for the old derrière :) The leather looks in reasonable nick too, just needs a good feed I suppose.

I like the handy cubby hole by the throttle pedal where you've kept your oil top up bottle, neat detail.

came home from work and thought I could spend 1/2 an hour figuring out which cylinder is dead, maybe borrow a compression tester from the neighbour etc etc.

Started up the car and it seemed smoother than before.

All six cylinders are working now :mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

called Dead_E23

he reckons that maybe a piston ring had stuck and heating up / cooling down from last time has freed it up

anyway whatever was gummed up, seized, damp or fouled has fixed itself

I left it running for 20 minutes or so. it doesn't overheat, pressurise the hoses, smoke knock or do anything bad :D best day I've had for ages

Dammit man, I need a tan leather interior for mine... Hmm, wonder if I could use the Escort to carry a 604 interior.

Get the 305 working - you can use that. But I want a Kalashnikov bringing back for the next time I nip into Salford.

I think that they are the same as Peugeot 505 (saloons with rear discs) and possibly 504

As useless as a chocolate teapot in terms of an offer, but I think my dad might have some back home in Australia

Dean Hunter is offering me a used pair of calipers for £100 and I found a seal kit for under £20 on ebay. The used calipers have the advantage of being complete with all of the clips, brackets etc and I don't think I'll get a better deal.

I somehow suspect that I wouldn't get a pair of calipers to the UK for cheaper than that for you :D Be good to give them a refurb too, both of our 504's had sticky handbrakes. You'd park up with the handbrake then you'd have to drive off with it on, find some level ground, put the car in park and gently hammer the handbrake off :) I would imagine the problem is worse here given that there's far more crap on the roads here.
