uncle silvia
Well what can I say............. I saved it!! Some of you may of spotted this For Sale recently, from a guy local to me desperate to shift this and save it from the fate of his Landlord dragging it to the Scrapyard!!Well I offered some cash and organised a tow and its now in my possession and saved from the crusher!! Well Ive had a good look round it and the tin worm has got into it nicely in places (see pics). Its still in one piece tho and starts, runs and i think drives and none of the brakes are seized which is a result. (Ive now driven it under its own power and everything seems to work fine!!)Inside is pretty mint really apart from a few small rips and a bit of sagging on the seats. The Vinyl roof and paint has had it really unless your into your Rat rides with plenty of unforced patina lol. THE CAR IS NOW BEING BROKEN FOR PARTS........... PM ME WITH YOUR WANTS........... FEW WEEKS ONLY Well heres the pics of it so far..... Ill get some better ones soon as I go through it: Advert Pic...... Think this was a while ago lol Where its been sat for over a year Inside is pretty clean Cool retro yellow headlining Vinyl Roof Cracked Rust patch on sill Worst bit of rust in drivers door shut (Hinges still pretty ridged tho) Hole in passenger side inner arch (Drivers side is crusty too) It was full of junk!! For those that are local to Plymouth I found it on Google Street View a few years back lol It was Rescued today Now its home safe and sound NEW PICS: Inside is tidy Engine Rust hole on front inner arch Spanner lol Last taxed Tried some T-Cut and it worked
theorganist
Nice one, glad it has been saved. Can't be many of these left.
M'coli
Well done! That A-post does look grotty .
RoadworkUK
Well done indeed. Haven't seen one of those in the wild in years. My Auntie used to have a dark blue TL, on a '79T. Disappeared yonks ago. If you can get this recommissioned, it'll be fantastic.

MK5 Escort
Yes, I remember seeing the advert for this. An excellent save - well done! Beige interior - always a winner! Extra points for it being a five door too. Always been attracted to the Renault 5, particularly the earlier ones with those simpler rear lights. Where have they all gone? There used to be quite a few of them around here in the very late eighties/early nineties when I was little. Then one day they all disappeared... Given the excessive grot in places I suspect it'll be a while before that'll be back on the road, but it'll be worth it. I'd also be tempted to see what rejuvenation, if any, can be done with the paintwork to keep it as original as possible.
greengartside
Superb save Uncle S! I too liked the styling of the older 5's, there used to be one parked down the road from me for yonks but indeed they have all since long gone, even the facelift 5's are getting thin on the ground (there's a D-reg 1.4 in my scrappers at the moment) Would be great to see it hit the road again, well worth spending the time and money on it IMHO. Mr Lobster
Good work on saving it, there really aren't many left. However..... That looks utterly kippered. Sorry but it does. I've had loads of Mk1 R5s and the money you would end up spending on that would be way beyond what is even slightly sensible. These things really like to rust and what you can see of the a pillar and sill will be the tip of the iceberg. It will be a lot worse behind that. That said, it'd be a great source of parts and would probably make you a good few quid if you want to break it. And if you do want to break it, I'd give you some ££££s for the carb / manifold / air filter etc plus a few other bits. Let me know if you do! Other bits like doors and headlights would be worth a bit as well.
Alexg
Wow - that looks Friar Tuck'd Top work and best of luck
wuvvum
5 Autos are rarer than rocking horse poo. I'm assuming most succumbed to Renault Autobox Syndrome some time in the late '80s. I had one a few years back - the most comically overgeared car I've ever owned, it would do 50 in first gear. It might actually be worthwhile breaking that for parts - a number of bits are unique to the autos, the steering rack for example, and are therefore almost impossible to get hold of. AeroNautiCal
Given how cattled it looks, its going to be a labour of love to get that rust free. Great save though!
uncle silvia
I quickly fitted a battery to it tonight....... not even fastened up........ pulled out choke......... turned key......... VROOOOOM!! Idled perfectly too! I also tried some T-Cut on it and the paint polished up really easily! All is not lost lol
Negative Creep
I had a picture of it on my spotted thread years ago, hasnt changed much. The owner was nice but a bit on the odd side, as you might imagine
Luxobarges_Are_Us
...at least the interior does look pretty clean! What a great little car- I hope you manage to save it.
catsinthewelder
Thats a lovely little car and got to be worth saving. Alright, it ain't going to be worth restoring on an economic basis but even VW t2's tend to cost more to restore properly than you can sell them for afterwards. Thats why mines bodged and we're all on Autoshite rather than the Sherpa Sport Forum.
nigel bickle
I'm with Senor Crustacean -too far gone. Sad -but true. Parts will recoup your outlay though -handsomely. I'll have a few bits for mine -when you finally ''make the decision''. Good luck
carlo
I very nearly went to look/buy that. Quite glad I didn't now. Why do people put up a picture taken years ago of a car for sale? Anyway, congrats on your bravery, and as has been said should reward you in parts sales.
danthecapriman
Nice save, fair play to you if you do try to sort it though, as said, that rot looks bad but it will be far worse once you start cutting it out. Still be nice and pretty rare if it does come good though. The last one of those I saw was when I was working in a garage some years ago, it was a Y reg, auto in black. Very high mileage, wouldnt run or drive well but the elderly owner would not accept defeat and kept throwing money at it! I seem to remember changing points on it and getting very pissed off doing it! Cant remember why though? Keep us posted on any progress, would be good to see the work get done. HillmanImp
I would say assess it yourself as you are the one with it infront of you and can see the grot. Personally I would have a punt at welding it, it would not be pretty but it would be solid.
Bren
Good save, maybe a little too late looking at the corrosion. Once you start removing trim you will find much more grot. I had an E reg turbo - cracking drive but as temperamental as a bag of bitches on heat. Dump valve, bigger intercooler, k&n filter. On the twisties I could keep up with my mates 275 hp sapphire cossie, but on the straight he would pull away.

Rarity makes it worthwhile, even if it's financial madness. Just a thought, but are there many of these in French scrappies anymore, or maybe being broken for spares on the Leb? You might be able to get a complete door post chopped out of a froggy scrapper, would make your life considerably easier I imagine. Same goes for the front wing. Worth a look innit? Alpineandy
4 (ok 5) door Mk1 R5s are very rare as well!I'll be really impressed if you do keep it alive, but that rust looks major.
Mr Lobster
If you do decide to restore it and need any help / advice then I'll be more than happy to offer any advice I can. Trouble is, I'd be fairly sure that the A post probably isn't the worst bit. That rear sill appears to have been welded before and has already had the end bit sliced off. Once you get through the crusty remains of the outer sill then you will discover a whole world of misery behind it. Have a look here > http://www.renault4.co.uk/r5-rear-suspension-repair.htm for an idea. Sorry, don't want to sound pessimistic but that really does look very rotten indeed. If you do get it fixed and back on the road I'll be the first to buy you a celebratory pint though
uncle silvia
Ive now decided to sell it as "Restoration or Parts" as its a bit much work for me and no use to me as parts.Chatting to some Frenchy enthusiasts it is a rare beasty indeed and worth good money for the parts alone. I hope It can either be propperly saved or at least be a good doner car to save others. Ill start at £250ono and see how it goes. I think this is a fair price as Ive seen other 5s in simular condition go for that and more!!!! It is only the body thats a bit rough but everything else seems to work fine! Ill also consider offers or swaps for anything retro car related or anything that may interest me for my Jap cars. PM Me if anyone interested. Ive also added some new pics in the first post!
