Alexg
This £20 ebay buy was delivered yesterday, i'm not sure if anyone on here is into Scalextric? I've got huge boxes of bits I collected from my parents loft that used to be set up in a shed until 12 years ago. Plan is to set it all up in my loft. There are lots of old buildings and cars etc from 60s/70s/80s and if there is any interest I'll post it all up... flat4alfa
garethj
Cool, I bought our kids a Scalextric set for Christmas one year, and dusted a few cars off from when I was a kid. You wouldn't believe how fast they are nowadays - powerful motor, 16V instead of 12V and magnets so it grips grips grips oh dear it's crashed at a million miles per hour. I got these Mini banger stox going and the kids love them, but all the old ones are good for a laugh. With only the slightest encouragement I'll post some details of a car I built

meggersdog
I've still got my big box of assorted scalextric track and cars. Some time in the late 70's I was given a rally set for my birthday. The original set had two Mini Clubmans (both long dead) and at the time I bought more track and more cars with my pocket money. There was a 911 turbo,an Escort,a Datsun 260z and a TR7.Last time I set it up,about 8 or 9 years ago the only two working cars were a pair of red Mini Cooper's which even by the late seventies were second hand. RoadworkUK
I wish I still had my Texaco RS500 (on a shortened F1 car chassis with magnatraction.....), that thing was hilarious.Qualität posting!
Bren
Never had a scalextric - I had a TCR (still in my parents loft). My son got a scalextric for christmas - TBH I was'nt impressed with the way the cars slot into the track, the TCR cars just ride on it with pick up shoes touching the metal rails in the track. Here's the car that I built, with steering wheels for POWAH DRIFTIN and suspension so it looks like a proper American car, not cornering like a go-kart flat4alfa and catsinthewelder

outlaw118
Quality.... there was I all ready to read another vitriolic outburst against BANGOR RASERZ, and this gets sprung on me!!!I had a MK1 escort Mex, 2xmini's, TR7 and a sidecar thingy that was IMPOSSIBLE to keep on the track. All set up at Ma and Pa Outlaws, in the loft, think it still is, must be 20 years now..... KruJoe
Yeah, I thought we were gearing up for another scrap, too! I had to beg my parents for year after year before they relented and I received my first set for crimbo. It was a simple banked figure-of-eight with a pair of Metros just like this one. I think one was blue, and I used to unclip the body-kit, it came off in one piece to reveal a standard miniMetro. I still disliked the Ford-esque wheels on 'em though. Very soon I grew tired of their topply handling and the one unrealistic configuration, so I saved and saved at 50p a week, and bought out several friends' collections, and ended up with a huge collection. I think it's still all around here somewhere in boxes. If it has disappeared my folks haven't had the heart to tell me yet. Maybe I'll have a rummage some day.My all time fave was my red Porsche 959 like this. It had belt driven 4WD and stuck like glue, and I don't think it had magnets for traction. eddyramrod
Ohhhhhhhhh yayyy! When I were a saucepan we had Airfix MRRC instead of Scalextric, and I think I still have most of it. I remember a selection of out-of-date Formula 1 cars, and a couple of Mk1 Lotus Cortinas. Apparently there was a whole series of saloon cars (using most of the Airfix "modern saloons" range) but I never had those. My first Scalextric itself came in about 1989 (so I was 30...) in the form of the Sierra RS500 set. I topped it up with a Mighty Metro set (both of these brand new) and then started hitting the boot sales for used kit. I still have rather a lot of it, including those two sets. I picked up a Scalextric Capri, and painted it to match this one......and followed that with an Airfix Triumph Herald body, on a modified Mighty Metro chassis, to represent a Herald we had before I could drive. I have a couple of projects to complete too, untouched in years, including a FAB 1. West Lancs MG Club has very well-supported annual Scalextric nights! Well, I've got to use the years of study and career as a design engineer for something. I designed the chassis on 3D CAD then had it made by a 3D printer which is a fiendish bit of kit And to show there's nothing much new, America in the '60s makes a fascinating look into the world of saddos who like toy cars
AeroNautiCal
Proper toys! I've spent many a fun hour babysitting my friend's little lad, and I'd always let him win. He used to like getting his car to fly off and hit me (something I didn't discourage). Great fun.
boobydoo
All I ever wanted for Christmas as a lad was a Scalextric. I'd have been happy with even the most basic set.Did I ever get one? No. A hamster that died after two weeks, yes. A cassette recorder complete with Boney M tape , yes. Even the shitiest present ever...a MAMOD traction engine....a God-forsaken toy that you had to fill with meths and set alight only to watch it to crawl along in a straight line at -50mph. Yawn. Oh, the disappointments of Christmases past.
johnbaz
We bought our lads a Scalextric set over twenty years ago, me and the missus heard strange noises coming from the stairs, it turned out that they had set the track out so that the bend was in line with their bedroom door and the flying off the bend at full speed sent them into the wall at the top of the stairs causing a ricochet down the staircase.. The cars were totalled after 20 or so minutes John
Alexg
I used to love collecting Scalextric, the buildings, the track and paraphernalia more than playing it. Some of the catalogues are great and shite filled - check out the illustrations in this one from about 1983. Who knew Spiderman carried out his speed research in a TR7 ! dollywobbler
I had the Mighty Metros! Seem to remember it wasn't long before they shot off the track and smashed their lovely hatchbacks to bits. I'd say my miniMetro 1.3HLS was like a scaled up Scalextric. Thankfully I never found the critical speed that makes it fly off the road, though the Fenland roads did their best to help me find it... Not sure he's quite ready yet though even if I am...
r.welfare
Marvellous. I had that self-same '83 catalogue - that Alison Davis was no looker. I had the XR3i set, myself. Garethj, that home-made car of yours is superb. Where did you get the shell - scratchbuilt? Suits either copcar livery for Dukes Of Hazzard action, or primer grey to bring back memories of the A-Team (all you'd need is a 1/32nd scale shop front to crash it through). Captain Mainwaring
Wowzers. Cheers for the scans, Alexj, never realised just how much stuff you could get for a Scaletrix... I had the Mighty Metros when I was very young. I can almost smell the controllers as they got warmer and warmer now. Happy days. I latterly had an inferior Tomy set after I'd worn out the Scaletrix. It was actually pretty good, although the 205 GTI and the other car (can't remember what it was) got a right drubbing in the time I used it.. Still got it though so can't rule out ever cracking it out again to see if it still works!
Mr Lobster
Perhaps a tie-up with Mr Lobster if you decide to enter series production? Already discussed The problem is licencing though. If you make a model of their car, you've got to get a licence from the manufacturer. With some its dead easy (Ford I believe to be one) but with others they want to see the model, the packaging it will be sold in and allsorts so it could become a bit of a minefield and potentially costly.
