As we all know, in the last few months the standard of the forum has started to decline, We have had some pretty lame threads with sod all about cars in them let alone old naff ones which the forum should be about and lots of girly bitchiness between each other.

This has resulted in several decent long term members deleting their threads and accounts and foxtrot oscaring off out of here which I'm gutted to see.

I love this site, There's always something decent to read, it makes me laugh, I've been known to go into work and tell the lads about something I've read (Normally resulting in a "Get a life Trig" response  ) and i feel part of a friendly communality, the Stondon meet last year just goes to prove what a great thing is going on here.

I don't want to see this forum crash and burn over night, I believe it's about time we had better moderation on here, Someone who's active on here on a daily basics just to lock the spam, PU51 and any other shite threads which always ends up turning ugly.

I want to see any non-car chat moved to the GOM or Grin threads and to keep the site free for posts about Talbot Tagora's or Simca's and other such shite.

What i'd like to know is what do you other forum members think?, do we need light moderation?, (PLEASE NO ARGUMENTS LADIES) would the management be happy to allow another one or two long term members to become moderators, If yes is there anyone who would like to to do the job who we can trust not to go all RR on us and start locking everything? and if no, why not?.

DISCUSS.

They've got their own, very quiet forum now. Leave them to it.

Don't see any point in mods on 'ere. We've got the 'friend / foe' option. As long as a certain cretin is in my 'Foe' box everything is right with the world.

Having said that, if I was asked to moderate, I'd do it. Occasionally.

I don't spend a lot of time on here due to the forum layout, and due to the reverse snobbery against owners of modified/ cared for cars.

I'd moderate, but I'd want a layout rethink first.

Just my 2p.

I do love the forum really, and some of the thread/ posts are hillarious.

Unfortunately the friend/foe button hasn't stopped this happening.

Moderation doesn't need to be heavy just there to be used when the bitchiness starts, which isn't very often. However we have lost four regular members in the last week, where if the threads had been locked as soon as the nastiness started they may well still be here!

Light moderation - Yes, deleting trolls/spam and removing troll threads, but I think O/T threads should be allowed. I think a bit of healthy debate is a nice thing to have, although it should be kept well clear of Religion or Politics in my opinion.

Extra moderators - No way. It's Mr H Sceptre and Electric Leyland's forum, and they are more than capable of running it, I think any more 'mods' would spoil it. All I ask is that one tries to come on at once a day even just for five minutes, just to tidy up any shit.

I've been here for a long time now, perhaps in the old days it was easier to let it moderate itself as there were less people. Anything that can keep it more like that, but evolving as things do, is good with me.

Keeping off-topic chat to the grump/grin threads would be a good idea. I make a point now of never posting on the former, often I don't read it at all as what I really want to see here are pictures of old cars from now/days gone by and read something of interest/humour about them.

When it went a bit poor on here a while back I only read the eBay tat thread.

I would prefer not to have the forum divided into sections.

I don't know so much about better moderation: the basics you've outlined are what I'd expect as the minimum policing of a forum. And quite frankly, that's all I'd want to see. Don't want it split into sections, and I don't particularly want O/T threads on politics/sport w.h.y - I have other forums for all that!

There's something truly unique about Autoshite, both in its' concept, and in the forum's dynamic. I've gone off it a bit myself, these last few weeks; but I'm not about to sod off, 'cos I know it will come back again. All forums go thro' cycles, some of them are lows, and a little light policing could make it stable enough to cough into life again.

Bit like electronic ignition for your classic heap...

No to separate sections from me.

I like to think that part of being on here is rummaging around seeing what lunacy is buried deep in various threads.

If it was all in the Grumpy or Grin bit it'd be just like every other forum on t'web.

+ 1

I think the layout is fine as it is. O/T threads, to be honest, if no one is interested then they dont need to read or reply to it.

Please, no sub-division.

"Better" moderation? That infers an element of "poorness". AS is not poor, nor is the way it operates as a forum. Au contraire mon frere.

Only a tweak of half-a-notch towards a more hands-on approach would be plenty.

I dislike anything being deleted, by mods OR norms. Simply locking a thread (if things DO spiral out of control) to prevent further postings and editings would be more agreeable, and everyone could see what was going on beforehand.

Over the last ten days, what has been lacking most of all, in my humble opinion, is the ability of just a few users to keep it in their pants, and for a few others just to take a step back and breathe.

Once upon a time this was a great and very quiet forum. Perhaps a dozen posts in a day? Until something happens to make it better, I for one am going to continue to be very quiet as I've just grown very tired and bored of all the dross. I do not see that the management have any interest in it anymore. One hasn't even logged on in two (rather busy) weeks. Oh well.

This. Although I do think we could do with more proactive deletion of spam threads. Either that or for people to stop replying to fugging spambots.

Having not seen much of you on here since Black Saturday #1, I was a little worried you'd got completely fed up of it.

 at Wuvvum's reply to KruJoe.

In agree Seth and hence this thread, I'm hoping that one of them will read it and will reply with some perils of wisdom that will make it all better again, but i fear that won't happen as they live a different life now to that of 6-7 years ago when this forum was invented.

We don't need sub-sections, having one sections makes Autoshite what it is, take that away and it's the same as any other forum, ALL I'm asking is someone, be it the management or someone else, just to be on hand to lock the spam, that PU51 thread being one of the main problems, If we get threads like that again they need nipping in the bud quickly, not left for days and weeks for people to start rows in.

I'm starting to find it an effort on even look on here recently and that's something i never thought would happen, just because of all the dull dross I'm seeing. and that saddens me.

Mixed feelings. Anything 'non motor' related should really be in the grin or grumpy thread anyhow so perhaps a little clean up here and there or some 'invisible' moderation via a polite pm to the 'offenders' may help?

Mostly though if people stopped spitting their dummy out and either a) ignored the person/people they rail about or B) just sent them a pm instead I bet it'd be a lot nicer on here.

What seems to have happened (and I stand to be corrected) is that for whatever reason one or two people got pissed off, told it like it was and then a couple of things followed: either the recipient spied their arse and we got an argument in public or others saw what was happening, fancied a bit of EFF YOU/SLANDER too so jumped on the vitriolic band wagon and it all starts again.

People are always going to be pissed off with other people/certain threads/posts/whatever but surely it's how you handle it that matters. Either ignore them or pm them seems best but giving it large on the open forum via the medium of a smoking keyboard does naff all really, except perhaps exacerbate matters.

Just like those of us who post non-motors related shit should stop and think about where we're posting it (if indeed we should at all) those who like to get all 'all angry of Manchester' might need to think about what they've said on an open forum.

*When I mention pm's I'm not on about threats/abuse/keyboard Conan remarks but perhaps a polite word in their shell like. We can do polite I assume?

I am getting slightly frustrated with the fact something always seems to 'occur' on this forum when I am at work, these last few weeks have been pretty turbulent. I won't delete my account, and rarely get annoyed with any members on here! It is just the internet, but as previously mentioned, it can be difficult to digest some comments which are meant in a light hearted manner, as some people may be unaware of said users mannerisms. But hey, that's just my opinion!

I wouldn't recommend any divided sections however, the simplicity of this forum is something that attracted me to it in the first place. I will try and post more though, I have definitely been neglecting it somewhat recently. A real shame Tayne has gone though, he is a decent guy. Let's just try and keep the rest of us on here though, okay?

I know I don't post much on here, but I do tend to look through every day just to see what car-related comedy you regulars have been up to :) I'd say moderating and sub-sections isn't needed as hopefully the few tiresome people who created all the problems have now buggered off.

I was (technically still am) a member of another motoring forum, and have been since 2002. It started to piss me off, so I simply don't log in any more.

PS I didn't think one could remove one's account from this type of forum anyway.

Funny enough i signed up to a Escort forum last night after spending ages looking for one, After posting some photos of my Mk3 i started to get snotty replies about me trying to sell it on the forum... (WTF?!) and then some wise guy posted this.

dont like 4 doors anyway lol,old fudders family cars and do nought for me, so no likey here.

So I've decide that they can poke it, I'm in two minds to delete my posts on there as well.

I have a theory. The recent turmoil is more to do with membership criteria than moderation.

I know that sounds a bit odd, but bear with me..

Think back to the "old" forum, and how hard it was to get approved for membership - you needed approval from a moderator to join, the mods are largely absent and it could take weeks before you could post, and often you needed another autoshiter to plead on your behalf, or join and post in a special purgatory forum to gain membership. This, obviously, takes some effort on the new member's part and only those truly dedicated to the cause succeeded. Result? Nice, cosy slow forum with good content and (mostly) good atmosphere. Kind of like a village pub in a way.

Now, the new forum. Easy, instant access for anyone who stumbles across us with google. Spambots, trolls, delusional teenagers and all manner of rubbish can now me full posting members with only an email address and about a 20 second wait. Instant gratification, and no need to spend 3 weeks "mute" reading the place and wanting to join in, just wade in and annoy the regulars. It's like the village pub got bought by wetherspoons and they are busing in people from slough. Old Ted is really pissed off, he didn't finish his pint and he's taken his dominoes home with him.

I haven't done any regular posting recently as I'm now based on site during the day with no internet access. I spend most evenings and weekends in the garage doing stuff, so I only check the ebay tat thread out regularly.

I noticed all the 'grief' threads but I'm not interested so don't reply to them. As regards moderation. The site is Messrs Sceptre's and Leyland's, so it's up to them, but on a personal note, NO. I think that the vast number of new members has seen a change in the style of the site....(Scary posted while I was writing this, but I agree, it's since the format change)

Log on to somewher like MG-Rover.org, and you will see what Mods do to a place. Conversly look at the desolute waste that is Aronline's forum to see what thousands of sub section's do.

I won't knock the site's Gaffers though because they provide a free forum, and a free reign. I think Scary is spot on.

Saying that some us old giffers forget that when we were 15 and itching to drive (1989 in my case) cars that were only 15 years old were seriously retro, so we ought to wind our neck in when some poster is all excited about Escort Finesse's and Astra mark 4's, and has his first big project like chopping some coils or doing a pad change. Its to easy to forget what obvious knowledge you have, you didn't allways have.
