Cars you wouldn't mind owning. BUT NEVER WILL..

Recommended Posts

As all shiters know, there are more makes and models of shite cars in existence than its possible to own. I'm sure we all hanker after a certain model of car that, while ownership may be perfectly attainable in terms of price and availability, for what ever reasons, deep down you know that YOU WILL NEVER OWN THIS CAR.

Example 1)

citroenxm.jpg

Citroen XM. I have liked the look of these since I first saw one motoring around years ago. Its like something Captain Pickard would take him mum to the shops in- tons of electronics and hydraulics wrapped up in a very strange looking pointy shell- Extra shite points if its a supertanker/space shuttle like estate version. These are now pretty cheap with MOT'd examples available for £500 or so so there is no real reason why I can't one day have one of these fine barges. The wisdom of buying a very complex french car for this amount of money may be questionable however, and for this reason I WILL PROBABLY NEVER OWN ONE.

Example 2)

LDV Pilot.

I started a thread a few days ago on these little bus/van/peoplecarrier things. They seem perfect, room for the family plus have the advantage of being an actual van, so loads of rubbish and tools can be loaded into the back. It's the thinking mans VW campervan! Theres loads about at bargain prices, ready to go. but again, deep down there's something telling me- I WILL NEVER OWN ONE.

Maybe its the fact i'm committed to shite I already own, or the wife hates them, but there are stacks of cars that I will just never get to own- ever.

Im a very sad person- i know!

Does anyone else have any shite like cars that they aspire to, but deep down for whatever reason know they will never get the opportunity to get their hands on?

Lotus Carlton. I'd absolutely HEART one but purely for financial reasons I never will.

Come along Billy, we all know that, whilst they might go like shite off a shovel, they ain't shite. Still would though.

Im going to give my choices some thought....

It's a Vauxall Carlton with a bodykit. What's not to shite ? lol.

I've always wanted an AE86 Corolla. Even 10 years ago when they were just cheap old heaps no one excpet the odd Paddy rallydriver really cared about.

I suppose it's a bit obvious for me that there are loads of Euro cars I'd love to own but never will, because they can't be imported to the States. But I want an Alfa 166 something fierce.

Anyway, of what's for sale in the States:

Mk III Golf 5-door. They're not actually very common here, and finding one that's clean enough is nigh on impossible.

1994-98_Volkswagen_Golf.jpg

MkIV Jetta with the VR6. I really like these but they're all over 100k miles now and the repair costs for the electronics have scared me off.

dsc_0007.jpg

46747442.jpg

Volvo 850R

volvo850rback1.jpg

First gen Acura Legend. Nice V-6 power, not a big behemoth like later Legends, available manual trans

1987_acura_legend-pic-15612.jpeg

Cadillac Eldorado. Because a front-drive 275-hp V-8 is so sensible. Nice cushy interior though.

CAEL9202.jpg

eldo-interior.jpg

A first-gen Mazda MX-5 1.8. Lovely top-down motoring but just too boring.

Eagle Vision TSi. These are surprisingly good to drive, and they are clones of the first Dodge Intrepid/Chrysler Concorde. But the Eagle has an optional 214-bhp V-6 and a manumatic gearbox. Cool backstory on these, as the LH platform they used had a longitudinally mounted engine but they were front drive. The origin goes to Renault's ownership of American Motors Corporation, when it provided AMC with the platform from the Renault 21.

1997_eagle_vision_4_dr_tsi_sedan-pic-28477.gif

1997-2001 Honda Prelude. Razor-sharp steering and handling, and SH was quick, too. But they've all been modded to death, or if you find a clean stock one, too expensive.

I have massive wantings for a Capri RS 2600, but;

A: There aren't many of 'em

B: There are even less that haven't been fiddled with - which is understandable with most homogolation specials.

C: They're getting more and more expensive. Last tidy one I saw for sale was £15,000 without an MOT

Zodiac FF. Don't know why I want one of these, as I imagine it'll be pretty crap, but I don't think I'd be too upset if I found a good nick Executive Estate instead.

Dodge Charger 440 R/T. I'd love one, but after the experience with the Jensen I won't ever buy one.

Theres loads I'd really like but will probably never have. Heres a selection -

Malaga. Rarity makes it unlikely.

DS. Getting too dear plus slight terror of it breaking

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQe6oKaGop6GXm1_r6uRkJPQrfHVWYA_bq9wUOyF3JfL-uQM7GfjA

Capri 280. Good ones are properly expensive

Citroen H. I think the dream would be much better than the reality.

Sorry Dave wasn't concentrating! If it's shite we're on about then without wishing to sound cocky nothing fits the bill because I'm determined to own all the crud on my radar including an Alfa 156 A40 and ADO16 along with plenty of others.

Predictably, the car in question hails from France:

laguna_ii_2.0t.jpg

IMHO a very nice looking thing, and I drove a few new ones back in the day (hire cars) and was fairly impressed.

The fact that they had as much value after a few years as a copy of "It's Chico Time" only added to the appeal.

They're definitely my sort of thing.

But........ as we all know, they can be a world of trouble. So I'll pass.

I also can't think of anything shite that I would not be able to own, if it's available of course; it's the classics such as the Alfa SZ and Lancia Aurelia GT that have drifted so far above my price level that there is no point in even dreaming :( On the other hand I can't ever see myself running a small fleet of elderly shite, something sporty, a luxobarge, a load -lugger, etc, etc, which I would quite like to do. As well as the cost, although with a bit of creative accounting that could be no problem  there is a slight matter of keeping several old cars actually in a fully working state, space (the main one for me), not to mention the likely reaction from The Management.

I think the XM is a far more sensible buy than it looks. The suspension is actually VERY SIMPLE- you just need to have the spheres reconditioned every once in a blue moon. The engines are all proven PSA units, so that leaves us with just the electronics which may have been super complex for 1994, but I bet they're far simpler than a 2002 Yaris (let alone anything produced in 2011). Parts availability is good, and the abysmal quality of the dealer network means there are decent Citroen specialists all around the UK...I guess a poorly maintained/buggered autobox would be the only serious thing to worry about.

As for me, I'd say just about anything bearing the Maserati trident. I would absolutely love one, but I'm terribly scared of the potential for astronomically high bills- John F is a brave man indeed!

Unfortunately besides chocloate autoboxes the front struts have a habit of deciding to come through the wing for shits and giggles too. Real shame because when it comes to insanity car owning XMs are right up there.

Ah, yes, I had forgotten about that, although I think I read something on the XM club forum about a mod that sorts this out.

Actually a Jag XJ40 will probably be something I'll never own. I expect by the time I get round to it they'll all either be a good few grand or rotted into a pile of dust. Or both.

Hey ugly, which state are you in? My friend in San Diego has an Eldorado to sell, just like your pic only all-white. PM me for his email if you want...

Meanwhile, a few from me...

100_1893-vi.jpg

Any Rolls Royce really, although the Shadow 2 and Wraith in this pic are good enough to illustrate the point...

100_1454-vi.jpg

Triumph Spitfire Mk4, yes really! I always thought these were a singularly pretty little thing, and most of the engineering is pretty simple.

100_0940-vi.jpg

Mk1 Fiesta! Passed my test in one (June 1978, UYM 717S, Peppermint Green) but now they're pukka classics. This red one is the only one I can remember seeing over here, but at least I know the owner so I suppose it's still possible...

100_0898-vi.jpg

Mini pickup, always wanted one. I could take you to two here (same owner as the Fiesta), but somehow I don't think I'll ever have one.

100_1862-vi.jpg

Vauxhall PA. Cresta or Velox, wouldn't matter. At least I can say I've done this one, even if I never got to drive it on the road, as I did have a 1961 Velox when I was 18...

Velox-vi.jpg

...but to have one I could actually drive, now that would be paradise!

Oh Gawd, you've got me thinking again:

Silver Shadow Mk1 or possibly Bentley T1. Must be completely unspoilt and original, ideally in a plain colour.

Jag XJ6 series 1. Pale blue colour or maybe white. Again has to be completely original and unspoilt.

Dunno why, but I love the Fiat Strada:

20090604205430!Fiat-Strada-Side.jpg

It would have to not be a hot one, have those wheels and be slightly tatty. Irrational thread fodder?

Citroen LNA:

LNA007.jpg

My first car was a Talbot Samba, which for you youngsters is pretty much the same car. However, i really wanted a single spoke wheel, but the one off an LNA doesn't fit a Samba. Boo!

I'll probably never own one as I haven't seen one on the road for at least 15 years.

Opel Rekord P1, Germany's F-type Victor

Any version of this shape Toyota Crown Custom, preferably a coupe in metallic light blue plz. Any surviving ones are bound to be in the hands of J-hoarders now though.

1948-54 Humber Pullman limo, in black

1967-9 Plymouth Barracuda fastback, least an Arrow shape Rapier kinda looks like one

My first car was a Samba, too! Sambas and LNAs are still reasonably common in France- I'd keep an eye on leboncoin if I were you. In fact, there is a half-decent Samba Cabrio in Sheffield that's been for sale for a while and I really want it, but can't buy as I have nowhere to store it- parked away from where I live, it would be a total magnet for vandals, opportunist thieves etc

Oh, dear, theres many to choose from. Here is a selection off the top of my head:

One like this again, complete with TWR bodykit:

NewRov.jpg

NewRov8.jpg

Rover 800 Coupe:

Rover-800_Coupe_1996_800x600_wallpaper_02.jpg

I really want one, I have driven a few and think they look nice. I've nearly bought a couple in the past but due to lack of space (again) this makes adding more cars very difficult.

Renault 14 due to the rarity:

4829815706_dcedf12053.jpg

Early Mk2 Cavalier hatch with this grille:

DSC00594.jpg

DSC00586.jpg

There is a still a fair few of them about, but most tend to be SRis, SRi replicas, later models or generally modified.

Vauxhall Senator:

Vauxhall%20Senator.jpg

E34 BMW 5-series (2.5+)

1995-bmw-540i-side-2.jpg

Mk3 Fiesta

VEH337.jpg

Others:

Sierra Sapphire Ghia with pepperpots and Orange lights

Sierra Sapphire Cosworth

Mk3 Granada

Ford 'frogeye' Scorpio

E32 BMW 7-series

Mercedes W124 S-class

VW Pheaton

R8 Rover 200

SD3 Rover 213/216

There is more, but I think the pics are too big to carry on.

On the whole, I cant see myself owning anything else to be honest, I really would love to go out and tbuy other cars, but since I bought my Rover 800s I just dont have the space and I have no interest in selling them.

Cadillac Eldorado. Because a front-drive 275-hp V-8 is so sensible. Nice cushy interior though.

CAEL9202.jpg

Nice. I do like those nineties Cadulacs, both these and the Seville DTS. They're inbetween the sheer loveliness of a '60 Coupe DeVille and the sheer shiteness of the Cetera (the US Vauxhall Omega) and the Cimmaron. I bet they drive really nicely as well, all wafty and effortless.

The want list includes a Ferrari 512BB and 300SL Gullwing. Guess what the slight obstacle is?

A chap I was working with (back in 2001) in Florida bought one of these to replace his 6 month old Corvette.

I honestly thought the build quality was on a par with a MKII Cavalier, it was shocking for a supposedly premium brand marque...

Saab 900 T16 - had one ('85 vintage) in the past and loved it, even thought they're not daft pricewise and super-duper cars, couldn't justify the fuel. CX turbo diesel (S1 - not the plastic Peugeot dumb shite) on the other hand, running on bio or waste veg would be great. XM a Peugeot in disguise except for the lack of steel springs), would consider one if it had Citroen steering (like the French ones did).
